Why Is It Important To Know Your Neightbourhoods In Houston?

Being the largest city in Texas, you’ve most probably guessed that Houston is a big city, that‘s not always walkable to every where you may want to visit or be at the centre of the adventure and excitement. For this reason it’s best to match up visitors interests to the neighbourhood or district that best matches what you would like to do and see. Worry not whether you love your arts, green spaces, skyscraper, shopping or foodie hangouts, there is an area for you to find the perfect hotel.

Houston Neighbourhoods At a Glance

Although Houston is divided into some eighty eight super neighbourhoods, tourists and visitors will not really be interested in these as the vast majority are residential areas with pretty much houses and places that serve the local community.

These are the main neighbourhoods for tourists, we would recommend to stay in 

• Downtown – perfect for first time visitors who want easier access to the sights via public transport.
• Montrose – ideal for art, eclectic shops and nightlife enthusiasts. Cool restaurants and a laid back vibe.
• Galleria or Uptown – Texas’ largest and most luxurious shopping destination with lots of high-end malls.
• Museum District – Art and culture buffs will enjoy the range of museums and walking in Hermann Park and the McGovern Centennial Gardens.
• Medical Center – The best locations for families and children for safe exploration. Also a great base if you’re in Houston for an interview at the Medical Center, supporting an inpatient (there are around 21 plus hospitals here) or need to be close to Rice University Campus.

Other Houston Neighbourhoods

Houston has other areas such as the Northeast Neighbourhood, which is residential and therefore much better value for money but as tourists, we feel that may be a little more further out than desired. There is also Stafford, which is very residential yet a 30 minute drive into Downtown if you are hiring a car. It’s a good place to stay if you are attending an Indian wedding and want to be close to the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple.

Additionally there is also the Third Ward, which is popular with Houston’s African American community and is located a little Southeast from Downtown. There are some University campus sights and restaurants if you have the time to explore a little. 

The Bay area of Houston is towards the outskirts on the East and is well placed to head to Galveston, the NASA space Centre and Houston Space Centre as well as Kemah Boardwalk.

How Much to Budget For Hotels in Houston?

In areas such as Downtown and Galleria/Uptown, you would need to maybe increase your budget a little but for the purposes of this guide, here’s how we are classifying different brackets. Room rates depend very much on the category of room and when you plan to visit, Peak times will always be a little more even with budget accommodation geberally.

• Good Value – $70-$90 per room per night (generally below $100).
• Mid-Range – $110 – $200 per room, per night. 
• Luxury – $250 upwards. 

What all Hotels Include as Standard

For individual hotel selections that we have featured, we don’t mention amenities like WIFI and in room TV’s, elevators, an iron and Ironing boards, hairdryers as these are generally included with most rooms. If you see something lacking, contact housekeeping at the particular property. 

Places to Stay in Houston By Neighbourhood

Downtown Neighbourhood

If visiting Houston for the first time, we would highly recommend staying in Downtown Houston for its endless places to eat and drink, points of interest such as sporting venues and outdoor spaces as well as some of the best hotels in the city. If you’re a business traveller and in Houston for a conference, the George R Brown Convention Center is located in Downtown too. 

What to expect: Stay amidst the towering skyscrapers and occasional green spaces as well as some lovely restaurants. Check out the smaller districts or neighbourhoods that make up the larger Downtown area.

Be-lavie Tip: to help manage expectations, the hotels in Downtown are pretty pricey. Even ones that are aimed at more of a budget focussed stay are a little more on the pocket than if they were located elsewhere. Therefore we would advise that you take into account that you may need to increase your budget a little if wanting to stay in Downtown.

Why Stay in Downtown: Things To Do & See

• Head to Discovery Green, a 12 acre park with art installations, a playground, a pond for canoeing and even a skating rink. It is directly opposite the George R Brown Convention Centre.
• Watch a Houston Astros home baseball game at Minute Maid Park,  or the Houston Rockets NBA team play at the Toyota Center, which is also a great venue to check out live performances and concerts.
• Discover street art at Avenida Houston, where there is artwork on rotation by national as well as internal talented street artists and graffiti writers.
• Spend the evening at the Theatre District in Downtown and watch a ballet, opera or one of the many stage shows.
• Head to Post Houston, once a former regional post office, it is now a cultural hub, housing offices, gardens, small independent businesses as well as a big food and drinks mall on the ground floor. There is also a five acre Skylawn on the rooftop which has free access and often houses events and exhibitions. It has great views over the Houston Downtown skyline.
• Stroll down to East Downtown (EaDo) where there’s lots of street art at Graffiti Park and some very hip restaurants and bars such as Leeland House, Tiny Champions, Rodeo Goat and Truckyard. take yourself to the Energy Stadium, where you can see the Houston Dynamos playing soccer (football), We stumbled upon some great breweries in this area too.

Who shouldn’t stay in Downtown? Those who like more of a suburb feel and prefer things s little more quieter.

Hotel Icon, Autograph Collection

Hotel Style: Boutique.

We stayed at this luxury boutique hotel during our week long stay in Houston and chose it for its historic feel, location right in the heart of Downtown as well as the smaller size and more personal feel in terms of service.

Housed in the original 1912 Union National Bank Building, Hotel Icon is a unique hotel featuring neo classical architecture as well as 135 rooms and 18 suites. Hotel icon is part of the Autograph Collection by Marriott and are picked for their unique style and experiences. They are known for their originality and attention to fine detail offered in terms of the service, decor and amenities. Hotel Icon was the 24th hotel welcomed into the Autograph Collection out of hundreds and it’s easy to see why.

The hotel offers a complimentary downtown shuttle service, within the highway.

We loved that each of the rooms has a wonderful rain shower, whirlpool and antique bath tub. The rooms have a spacious and individual feel about them with a king bed in most cases, an arm chair and a sofa bed.

Guest can enjoy high speed WIFI, a 24 hour fitness centre and dining in two locations. The award winning LINE and LARIAT Restaurant and Lounge serves breakfast, lunch and light afternoon food as well as dinner each evening.

This is a hotel that’s individual and distinguished amongst a variety of places to stay in Houston.

Hotel Icon has a wonderful team of helpful staff on hand who can provide concierge services and brilliant recommendations for attractions as well as dining options.

One notable feature about the hotel is it’s wonderful lobby area, which can be photographed from the Mezzanine Lobby, by special request, and the original frontage of the vault that has been moved to behind the reception area. If you love old world vibes then note the staircase and the elevators as well as the high ceilings and almost art deco touches.

What we love about Icon Hotel: The history of the building, personalised service, attention to detail, great location, the bar and experiences on offer. The concierge service is second to none. They also offer complimentary hot drinks in the lobby until late morning as well as juice and water throughout the day to hep yourself too. Their is a beauty spa facility bookable at reception. They also have a cigar lounge, of course not for smoking, and is great to hire out for small meetings or functions.

The Lancaster Hotel

Hotel Style: Boutique

One of the most unique luxury experiences in Houston, The Lancaster has been around for a hundred years and contains a curated collection of over 200 contemporary world of art by more than 100 internationally recognised Texan artists. 

Rooms are finished to the highest standards of elegance and luxury in neutral tones but also have a flair of comfort and relaxation.

It’s located in the Theatre district and dates back to the 1926 exuding classic luxury and the finest hospitality. The hotel does seasonal afternoon teas as well as having a contemporary American fine dining restaurant, named Cultivated F+B.

What we love about The Lancaster: The fine attention to detail, the service, gourmet daily breakfast and history.

Montrose Neighbourhood

If you prefer something a little less busy than Downtown, then opt for an area thats Southwest of the bustling Downtown, Montrose.

Although Montrose doesn’t have as many things to do for visitors like Downtown, you will see an abundance of eclectic shops, art galleries, independent quirky shops as well as a great array of bars and restaurants to sustain yourself quite happily. If you love heading out in the evenings then Montrose has many options, we personally prefer to head back after dinner and/or a couple of drinks. Most of the restaurants are located on Westheimer Road and theres a huge range to choose from.

What to expect: a boho vibe, colourful streets and lots of fun foodie options.

Be-lavie Tip: Montrose doesn’t have as many things to see and do like Downtown does but we think it makes this up in dining options and clubs. Also be warned when it comes to hotels, Montrose doesn’t have the same vast option as Downtown. 

Montrose is a LGBTQ+ friendly neighbourhood and even if you decide on not staying there we loved the vibe and more laid back feel of it.

Why Stay in Montrose: Things To Do & See

• Rothko Chapel, a fine example of a marriage of art and architecture.  American artist Mark Rothko has fourteen of his paintings commissioned by Dominique and John de Menil, created a spiritual haven of calmness for all to see. Unfortunately this was closed during our visit.
• The Menil Collection, housed in a beautiful building designed by Renzo Piano, there are over 16,000 pieces of artwork including artefacts, dating back all the way to the Paleolithic times right up to today. The collection is arranged into rooms that focus on the works of artist such as Picasso and René Magritte to mention a couple. 
• The Printing Museum, suitable for all the family, the focus is on the history of the art of printing. 
• Houston Center for Photography, if like us you appreciate photo exhibitions then pop along to discover some of America’s newest talents.
• Mural fans, keep your eyes peeled for some colourful street art to snap in the neightbourhood such as the ‘Painted Wall.
• Listen to live music, head to Numbers Club, Houston’s oldest live music and dance spot, Bar Boheme for Sunday brunch and to catch a drag show each Sunday.
• Vintage Shopping, Leopard Lounge has clothing from the early 1900s through to early 2000, you won’t miss it as the store exterior is painted in leopard print. Space Montrose is great for hand made items, candles and souvenirs. 

Who should stay in Montrose? A more hip and cool vibe and visitors who love to eat their way through destinations and love colour!

Who shouldn’t stay in Montrose? Those who prefer the business district feel and more of a corporate setting!

Hotels in Montrose Neighbourhood

La Colombe d’or Hotel

Hotel Style: Luxury

A five star hotel with a very artsy feel, being in Montrose of course! There are 32 beautifully individually decorated suites in three different categories and the hotel boasts around 425 pieces of original artwork, a sculpture garden, a private park, a social lounge, sunset terrace, two pools and outdoor dining options. They also offer spa services and a business centre.

Chef Jesus ‘JB’ Babaran heads the Tonight + Tomorrow French Bistro which serves up some unique flavours and cultures in this neighbourhood.

This four story bed and breakfast has a number of lovely well priced rooms featuring, artists’ works as well as exercise equipment and shaded verandas with panoramic views above the tree line. The rooms are nicely decorated and breakfast is a delicious organic affair. Also if you have hired a car, then there is free parking ports right outside the property.

Hote Style: Mid range, Great Value

This Mexican inspired open plan studio is called,  ‘Señorita Sunset’ and is colourful and a perfect comfortable place to stay with a mid range budget in mind. The small apartment is perfect for two with a pull out sofa bed, small kitchen area and a bathroom which comes complete with bath products and fluffy towels.

If you do have a car, there is unmetered free parking on the streets surrounding the apartment.

The Galleria or Uptown Neighbourhood

Visitors who love to shop, will absolutely love to be located in the Galleria or Uptown District. The Galleria shopping centre is Texas’ largest mall, with just shy of 30 million annual visitors, and of course is home to some of the best and luxurious hotels in the city. 

If you’re lucky enough for your budget to allow, then around a twenty five minute drive West of Downtown, you’ll land in Galleria which also has a few more things to do than just shop by the way!

What to expect: A lively more upmarket feel with lots of shiny fancy shops, places to eat, activities, family friendly activities.

Why Stay in Galleria/Uptown: Things To Do & See

• Head to The Galleria Mall, with its 400 plus stores, food courts, a skating rink and two swimming pools, not forgetting the 60 odd restaurants. This is also the home of many high end luxury brands like Gucci, Versace and the like. 
• Gerlad D Hines Waterwall Park, a stunning huge 64 feet waterfall that cascades down a wall. It’s definitely a photo opportunity.
• Uptown Park, is just a little North of The Galleri and is a more landscaped outdoor shopping area with upscale boutiques including, Elizabeth Anthony and LUCHO.
• Highland Village, another outdoor shopping centre with more familiar and affordable brands such as Banana Republic, Kiels, Sephora, Anthropologie, Sephora, Apple Store and the like.
• Memorial Park, when shopping is out of the way, head to Eastern side of the neighbourhood and take a lovely afternoon walk in the green space known as Memorial Park. 
• Houston Arboretum & Nature Centre, is perfect if you have kids in tow or just fancy an immersion into nature yourself!   

Who should stay in Montrose? If budget is no issue and you love to shop, dine out and love luxury experiences!

Who shouldn’t stay in Galleria/Uptown Neighbourhood? Those with a more conservation budget, who don’t like to shop when travelling!

From this location, you can easily visit local attractions such as Memorial Park, the Houston Zoo, the Houston Museum of Natural Science and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Rooms are comfortable and airy with all rooms having a kitchen so guests can make their own food or head to one of the many restaurants.

Museum District Neighbourhood

If you’re in Houston to discover more culture and love museums, then the Musuem district will be the perfect location for you!

It’s located around five miles or a ten minute drive Southwest of Downtown and has around nineteen museums for visitors to get their culture fix.The great thing is that certain museums are free in Houston, so if you choose well, it’ll be easy on the pocket to when it comes to things to do. As well as museums, there is the family friendly Hermann Park with many activities for children and all the family.

What to expect: As the name suggests, there are a lot of museums but also outdoor green space which is great for families. It’s quite a busy neighbourhood with plenty of culture vultures exploring the area.

Why Stay in The Museum District: Things To Do & See

• Budget friendly museums, there is a great range of Free museums to visit in the district such as The Menil Collection, Rice University Moody Center for Arts, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Asia Society Texas Center.
• Museum of Fine Arts, over 6,000 pieces of the countries art collections can be found here. It’s one of the largest in the US including some great Renaissance pieces.
• Visiting the Nancy and Rick Kinder building is a must. It houses international and modern contemporary art. 
• Cullen Sculpture Garden, sculptures from the 20th and 21st century artists. Keep an eye out for Houston’s version of Chicago’s bean, named The Cloud Column
• Houston Museum of Natural Sciences is a must visit with its dinosaurs and planetarium and IMAX Theatre. There is also Cockrell Butterfly Center
• Families may want to head to the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann park to watch a show.
• The Children’s Museum Houston has lots of interactive activities for children too.
• Other museums of interest could be the Holocaust Museum Houston, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Czech Center Museum Houston and the Houston Museum of African American Culture.  Our favourite was the Museum of Fine Arts and the sculpture garden

Hotel Style: Luxury

Perfect for business travellers as well as those holidaying, this is a uniquely decorated hotel which oozes boutique hotel flair. There are some wonderful guest rooms including pool villas, concept suites as well as the special Magnificent Seven Suites! Decor is quite ornate and baroque on occasions with some modern thrown in. There is also a very chic pool with equally chic sun loungers to relax on.

Food and drinks are served at the poolside or at the hotels restaurant Monarch, which serves a great range of American and Mediterranean food. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

Dating back 80 years, this is a boutique guesthouse that comes with a great mid range price tag. This is an adults only option and many rooms feature some original features such as fireplaces. Each of the eight rooms are styled differently and even have names such as Silk Road, Fairytale Tower Suite, to mention a couple. Some rooms come with a terrace whilst others have pool views. Guests can enjoy drinks by the pool but there is no restaurant on site.

Hotel Style: Good Value.

Pronounced ahy-luh-m, this is a small boutique hotel, offering great value for money. We particularly love their nod to sustainability and the sourcing of ethical products from soaps to bed sheets. Rooms are decorated in a neutral attractive style with a contemporary edge. Artsy style finishes are throughout the property that also has a great Espresso bar which turns into a cocktail hangout after 17:00. There is also a fitness centre, library and sundry shop.

The hotel also takes part in a community projects, with one such being providing clean drinking water to less fortunate communities in the world.

Medical Center Neighbourhood

This neighbourhood, doesn’t really have a lot to do except for the adjacent Hermann Park and its locality to Downtown. It is quite popular with those visiting Rice University as well as the Medical Centre, if for example you are travelling with a patient there or maybe exploring a job opportunity.

It’s also a good neighbourhood for families and from experience we would say it feels pretty safe and quiet in comparison to say Downtown. It’s only around a ten minute drive or so from Downtown so easily accessible.

What to expect: Green spaces in the form of parks such as Hermann Park and the Texas Medical Centre buildings.

Why Stay in the Medical Centre: Things to do

• Hermanm Park Golf Course, for golfing enthusiasts.
• Kemah Boardwalk, Medical Centre is around 34 miles away and it’s a great place for children with the amusements and rides.
• Take a walk in Hermann Park.
• Head to Houston Zoo (we don’t visit zoos but it is popular with families).
• There is a railway (Railroad) at Hermann Park that could be fun for kids.
• The NASA Johnson Space Centre is a a 29 mile drive away and takes about 35 minutes for a great day out for children and adults with an interest in space. This is the official training site for all astronauts in the USA and Mission Control.

Who should stay in the Museum District? Families and those visiting Rice University or Medical Center. Hermann Park is pretty close by.

Who shouldn’t stay in the Medical Center Neighbourhood? Those who love the hustle and bustle and lots of activities.

Located right in the heart of the Texas Medical Centre and connected via a skyway. With all the expected amenities, this 386 room hotel is perfect for a little splash of luxury. 

On the second floor there’s Driscoll’s restaurant which serves, regional freshly made dishes and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel lobby is home to the Paladora Lounge where guests can enjoy cocktails, beers and wines plus there’s a Happy Hour during the week. 

There is a Metrorail right outside (Red Line) with stops at Downtown and Museum district.

A great mid way option in the Houston Medical Centre district, the Hampton Inn has contemporary decorated rooms, a pool, fitness centre and a free hot breakfast each morning, this is a great stay option for all the family. The hotel also does offers on a regular basis so you can get some bargain stays here in return for the great location with MetroRail being so close to the hotel and being in Downtown within minutes!

A motel style set up, these apartments are perfect for families and contain a sleeping area, kitchen, tableware as well as private bathrooms. Cars can be parked outside complimentary. There is also a reception desk that is manned around the clock.

How to Get Around Houston

Flight – most people will arrive into Houston via one of two airports:

• George Bush Intercontinental Airport – 23 miles North of Downtown. Taxi to downtown is around $60-$90 (depending upon traffic and time of day).
• William P Hobby Airport – Seven miles southeast of Downtown. Taxi to Downtown is around $30-$40 (again depending upon traffic and time of day).

Car – Houston is a city that seems to be pretty spread out and not compact like others in the US. If you are planning on visiting more places that are not just centred around downtown and the surrounding areas served by public transport, then we’d recommend hiring a car. We always suggest finding the best priced vehicle for your trip with Rentalcars.com.

METRORail – we would recommend this way of travel especially if like us you don’t really need to hire a car for your trip. You can get between the neighbourhoods of Downtown, EADO, the Museum District and the Texas Medical Centre. the latter two are on the red line which is pretty easy to manoeuvre.

Fares are around $1.50 for a three hour ticket or $3 for a day pass. We found this to be a pretty convenient way to travel. Head to the METRORail website for more information.

Taxi/Uber – Most taxis between the boundaries of I-10, I-45 and I-69 are on a city wide flat rate of $6. We did get the odd Uber when returning home from restaurants at night but distances between places are pretty far and this can add to your travel budget pretty fast.

Houston did used to have a bike share program called Bcycle but unfortunately this shut down in mid 2024. 

Be-lavie Tip: We’d recommend buying a $3 Metro pass if you plan to travel around all day. They can be used on all lines as well as buses. Each Metro stop has a ‘Fare Monitor’ who wearing high visibility vests and a uniform and are there to help. The fare ticket machine was broken on one day and the fare monitor kindly took us to the main station on the metro to get a pass. They are really helpful and knowledgable and there to help you use the system safely and correctly.

We hope this guide helps other visitors to Houston determine where the best district is for their stay in the city. The article is based on our own trip and  the research we undertook whilst trying to find our ideal hotel in the city. We were there for business and pleasure so therefore opted for Downtown and the historical Hotel Icon. 

As a recap, Downtown is perfect for first time visitors and those in the city for business. Melrose is great for artsy and eclectic tastes, where as Galleria/ Uptown calls for serious shoppers. Culture Vultures make a beeline for the Museum District and families or University visitors, after good value accommodation should look no further than the Texas Medical Centre. Whatever your choice we hope this guide has been a great resource in crafting your own itinerary.
