What Does Vegetarian Friendly Mean?

When it comes to restaurants, cafes and coffee roasters in Chicago, when we refer to vegetarian friendly, we’ll be talking about non exclusive establishments that sell vegetarian food only. Although one-half of use is vegetarian, we tend to dine at a mix of places that serve both vegetarian friendly and non vegetarian food. This is particularly useful if you’re dining in a group of people who all have different dietary requirements.

Is Chicago Vegetarian & Vegan Friendly?

Yes, absolutely, The food scene in Chicago is immense with so much variety in terms of styles of cuisine as well as scope of restaurants. There are lots of vegetarian as well as plant based eateries in the city. Most restaurants who serve a mixed menu always have a few vegetarian options which are absolutely delicious and on some occasions I’ve heard it being said, better than the non vegetarian version! One thing is for sure vegetarian and vegans will  not go hungry in Chicago.

Be-lavie Tip: If you’re unsure of a restaurants menu, do send them an email or disclose your dietary requirements when booking online, often they will call you or email you back explaining alternatives. This way the chef’s team has time to source, locate and plan dishes for you so you receive the same experience as your fellow non vegetarian and vegan diners. This is almost always the case in Michelin starred or fine dining restaurants.

The Goddess and Grocer

A fresh produce grocery store come deli cafe, The Goddess and Grocer is a wonderful sppt for picking up things to grab and go or purchasing staples for the kitchen cupboard. The bakery and barista counter does a wonderful range of coffees, teas, fresh juices as well as freshly made sandwiches to order, sweet treats as well as savoury tarts and the most wonderful breakfast croissants. The brand has numerous locations around the Chicago and during our trips to Chicago we’ve visited one outlet at West Loop and another in Streeterville.

The outlet in Streeterville is a lot larger and has a big coffee barista bar, sweet treats and savoury baked goods area as well as a counter for fruit juices, breakfast orders and more. This one has a lot more indoor seating and has a very cool vibe about it with neon wall writing reading, ‘Eat Now, caffeinate’ adding a spot of fun to any visit.

Be-lavie Recommendations: (West Loop) The buttery, crispy breakfast croissants are such a treat. Have them filled with scrambled eggs, avocado, tomatoes, salad, cheese, veggies or a filling of your choice. Great morning coffees are served in paper cups, Take your breakfast outside on the terrace and enjoy whilst watching the world go by! (streeterville) At this location there is more choice and here we’ve tried the Impossible Breakfast Sandwich which is essentially Savory plant-based sausage, omelette, tomato, avocado, arugula and cheddar cheese in a english muffin with a side of cappuccino!

Kanela Breakfast Club

Having a four locations around Chicago, Kanela Breakfast Club, we ate at the Streeterville outlet. Kanela [kuh-nel-uh] means cinnamon in Greek and we can vouch it does feature in quite a few of their menu offerings.

Kanela serve a fusion of Greek-American breakfast and lunch dishes which have been cooked from scratch using ingredients that have been sourced locally.

The atmosphere is laid back with table seating as well as a few armchair clusters and the service is most definitely with a smile and very helpful. Portions are pretty large so you’ve been warned!

Be-lavie recommendations: We loved the cappuccinos here and tried the Kanela Roll which is made up of a slice of glazed cinnamon roll topped with cream cheese frosting, cinnamon and powdered sugar. It comes warm and is served on a skillet. It’s a sweeter breakfast option but is great to share with a savoury or between 2.

Yolk (Streeterville)

This breakfast, brunch and lunch spot has a few locations around Chicago and specialises in serving a variety of dishes which of course feature eggs but also breakfast dishes, sweet and savoury juices, coffees and more. Think ambitious pancake stacks, full breakfasts, omelettes, veggie breakfasts, avocado toast, smoothies, salads, granola, muesli, yoghurt and the list can go on and on. Whatever you fancy for the first meal of the day, you can guarantee Yolk has it on their menu, within reason of course! It’s a casual spot and tables are allocated on arrival. There’s generally lots of seating and service is very efficient.

Be-lavie Recommendations: We shared the cinnamon Roll French Toast made up of a gourmet cinnamon roll sliced into three pieces, dipped in Yolk’s secret batter revipe and grilled, dusted with powdered sugar. It’s a pretty large portion and we’d recommend sharing it and having it with a savoury breakfast dish or fruit.

Swadesi Cafe

A vibrant cafe atmosphere, where traditional Indian flavours fuse with modern twists in bringing delicious food and favourite dishes to breakfast, brunch and lunchtime dining affairs! Swadesi Cafe has a great range of drinks including masala chai, juices, signature lattes and even cream soda’s there’s plenty to quench your thirst. There is a great selection of Indian fusion snack classics such as toasties, sandwiches and ‘puffs’ filled with paneer and teh like.

On our visit, it was pretty busy with local office workers, folk on their laptops or people like us, just popping in for a little late breakfast. The varies menu and not too spicy food, makes it a great choice for all, in our opinion.

Allis at Soho House Chicago

Located at the members only Soho House (non-members can dine here), Allis is housed in a relaxed, laid back space in the historic 1907 building with original features. Seating is available at the bar, on the patio or the ground floor lobby of Soho House Chicago.

The food very much has a focus on light Mediterranean dishes with a little French twist and some delicious looking cocktails.

The decor is beautiful with a few old world accents and lovely placement green foliage displays.

Be-lavie Recommendations: When it comes to brunch time, the freshly squeezed OJ, the iced coffee and the chai latte are all very good contenders. For sustenance, the truffle omelette with a green salad or the avocado on sourdough toast are divine.

Sugary Chicago

Sugary is located in the Loop area of Chicago and sits opposite Millenium Park on Michigan Avenue. It specialises in brunch, speciality coffees as well as dessrts and it perfect for those who love a fancy, cute or maybe even pretty twist to their drinks.

Interiors-wise think, lots of florals, namely peony’s in a spectrum of co-ordinating pink hues, a vintage styled-ice-cream stand, pretty gold toned cages pastel coloured velour cushions and statement walls covered in butterfly wallpaper. Although we came her for a quick brunch, it’s perfect for a coffee, tea or one of their speciality drinks and they have a wonderful range fo vegetarian food and beverages too with milk alternatives of oat, soya and almond.

Think tea offerings such as London Fog (Earl Grey tea, vanilla and milk) or even Victoria Fog (English Breakfast tea, lavender and milk), berries or lavender lemonade, general cold and hot coffee selections with or without syrup shots. They also have a few baked goods like buttery croissants and cinnamon rolls to mention a few. There are also some great casual brunch options like omelets, Chiquiles Verde and Rojos. Some dishes that contain egg or meat can be substituted for avocado for vegans and vegetarians.

This is the perfect ‘instagram’ photo spot for those who love all things pretty, so was a little lost on us but we did enjoy our drinks and brunch and the service was very attentive. The staff were very good with making suggestions.

Be-lavie Recommendations: An iced latte with vanilla syrup on a cold day is a perfect beverage as is the fresh berry lemonade. The Victoria Fog is the perfect breakfast tea. The perfect brunch item for portion size is the Mexican Omelet which contains tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, cheese, house potatoes, and a small slice of toast.

Frida Room

Located in the heart of Pilsen, Frida Room is best known for its Mexican American breakfast and brunch in Chicago. The menu is a great mix of American and Mexican favourites such as pancakes, French toast, skillets, Breakfast Burritos, as well as their famous chilaquiles and more.

It’s a really great Vibe at Frida Room, named after the Mexican painter and artist, Frida Kahlo and features replica artwork of the artist as well as lots of Mexican artefacts in the restaurant and around the bar area. It’s colourful and vibrant and they even have their own merchandise available to buy!

Take a seat inside for a fun and lively atmosphere or sit on the front terrace fro some street vibes. We loved the window table which was great on a warm late spring day.

Be-lavie Recommendation: The restaurant services an array of drinks but the black coffee here is the best and is refilled as many times as you’d like. Seriously the best for breakfast or lunchtime and great value. Our favourite vegetarian dish here is the Enchiladas Verdes con Huevos. This classic Mexican dish consists of fried tortillas filled with cheese, smothered in homemade tomatillo salsa, topped with Mexican sour cream, Queso Fresco, red onion , coriander and their is the option to have it topped with fried eggs.

3 Arts Club Cafe at RH Chicago

This beautiful cafe is based in the grand central garden courtyard of RH Chicago, The Gallery at the Historic Three Arts Club, a 70,000-square-foot design gallery is located in Chicago’s rather upmarket Gold Coast neighbourhood. The space was home to the Three Arts Club and was built in 1914 to be used as a house for women studying music, drama and the visual arts. The space has now been rehashed and is now a great place to head for brunch or dinner or wine a drink at the wine vault.

The four floors above, are high-end furniture stores and there is also a rooftop which sells beautiful garden furniture. For most of us, this place is what furniture DREAMS are made of but the cafe downstairs is a little more affordable however with it’s Gold Coast location, it does come with a Gold Coast price tag.

It was very busy on the Saturday we visited and we did encounter a lot of unfriendly and rather rude locals, pushing past us, but we remained positive that this was an isolated occurance, as we would love to go back and have a lovely lunch in the grand central courtyard.

Be-lavie Recommendations: We only went along for a morning coffee (cappuccino) as it was impossible to get a reservation on a Saturday, even weeks in advance!

Restaurants (Lunch & Dinner)

Pizza Restaurants

Pizzeria Uno

So you’re in Chicago and you have to try the Deep Dish Pizza, right? Well there’s no other place than the OG, that is Pizzeria Uno. The Ohio Street branch located in a tall townhouse even has Historic Landmark status saying this is where Ike Sewll created the Deep Dish Pizza at this site in 1943.

His thought process was to combine some of Italy’s old, authentic recipes with the finest meats, spices, vegetables and cheeses, the pizza would become a substantial meal  in itself. He then opened up Pizzeria Uno specialising in the Deep Dish Pizza but as there was no way for it to expand, he also opened Pizzeria Due on the opposite street corner in the lower level of a beautiful, Victorian mansion.

Back at the Ohio Street branch, there are a range of things on the menu not just the Deep Dish Pizza and they make some pretty neat cocktails too.

The resident photographer will come around and take a little photo of you and your party so you can keep it as a souvenir or choose to buy extra copies! A little touristy but sometimes it works!!

Be-lavie Tip; The base of The Deep Dish Pizza is a little taller and thicker and much more filling than for example a New York style or Neopolitan pizza. It’s worth speaking to your server about portion sizes. This is definitely an acquired taste and we’re not sure if it’s for us but when in Chicago, it would be rude not to partake!!

Be-lavie Recommendations: The Pomegranate Margaritas are excellent. We shared a small vegetarian special deep dish pizza it was definitely enough for two people with the larger base and filling topping.

Bonci Pizzeria

This concept was brought to Chicago’s West Loop by Rome’s hottest Pizzaiolos, Gabriele Bonci in 2017. Located in the cool and hip West Loop, we love the feel and vibe of this laid back eatery. The concept is that diners head up to the counter, choose from a variety of toppings of pizza and the amount they’d like it then cut off. This slice is then weighted and payment is based on weight. The pizzas are then warmed up and bought over whilst you take a seat at the rustic counter’s and high chairs. It’s possible to take away of eat in and there are drinks available to purchase in the chillers. Bonci is a Zagat restaurant-rated establishment.

The pizzas are delicious, fresh, and the best part is you can get yourself as much as you want without having to commit to a large portion, that you can’t eat and end up carrying home.

Casual Lunch/Dinner

Cabra

Cabra is a bright airy space, decorated in a medley of vibrant colours, wicker furniture, ambience lighting, floor to ceiling windows, cosy nooks, a statement bar, the greenest foliage and a passionate draw. Start with a Pisco Sour or Yacht Club with campari, gin, pineapple and lime. Food wise the mushroom ceviche. The eggplant saltado and the yuca frites are super authentic and delicious.

The menu is a fine blend of healthy delicious freshly cooked dishes with American, Mexican and Italian twists. Their craft cocktails and beers are very good indeed. The decor is on trend and its a great relaxed vibe. Perfect for meeting in groups.

We’d recommend the mushroom and quinoa burger, the vegan tortilla soup which contains black beans and comes with avocado and tortillas and if you need some sides, the loaded fries are very good indeed.

Lirica

Located in Sable, a Hilton Hotel at Navy Pier, Lirica specialises in Spanish and Iberian inspired cuisine as well as dishes of Spanish, Portuguese and Caribbean tradition. They have a modern interior style with booths dotted around the edges and high top tables in the centre and towards the back.

The open kitchen provides a really nice touch as diners can see the food being cooked and bought out by the servers. The service at Lirica is brilliant and the staff are really great at making recommendations and helping with any queries regarding the menu.

The atmosphere is light and laid back, yet attentive and the perfect spot for a date or family dinner. You come for the food but also enjoy the views of Lake Michigan which are really lovely from the restaurants location.

We enjoyed the Lirica Salad (romaine, heirloom cherry tomatoes, black beans, avocado, queso fresco. cilantro cream. & tortilla strips with Champagne vinaigrette). For mains we opted for the Rigatoni Rosso (
spicy tomato crema, spinach, mushroom, & shaved parmesan)

The Hampton Social Club

With quite a few locations around Chicago and the USA, we visited the outlet in Streeterville for a laid back lunch on Sunday. the atmosphere was pretty lively with groups of girls brunching and couples enjoying a leisurely few drinks. There was also live music which was quite a nice touch. we didn’t’ reserve a table in advance and were therefore seated at the bar, which was quite a nice spot where we could see the bar tenders making a variety of drinks!

A coastal-inspired restaurant and bar with the famous pink neon lettering that reads, ‘Rose all day’, it’s hard not to like The Hampton Social Club and they have a great range of vegetarian choices on the menu.

Scofflaw

This strictly 21+ bar and casual food spot specialises in gin based cocktails as well as craft beers, which have been locally sourced. It’s coated in the very cool Logan Square area and has some classic bar-style decor, think chandeliers, replica baroque sofas but with all the prohibition vibes. We loved the relaxed and laid back vibe here.

Reservations are encouraged nut not essential and we would most definitely say weekends are pretty busy so booking well in advance means you don’t have to hang around. The menu is classic American with a slight European fusion and it’s a delight to see that there is so much vegan and vegetarian choice on the menu. From burrata to Frito Misto, to plant-based burgers and meatless meatballs. You won’t go hungry and the animal protein eaters have just the equal amount of choice. XOCO

This Mexican is lively and provides very quick service with a huge smile, delicious food and wonderful service. The restaurant locate din Chicago’s River North district is Chef Rick Bayless’ take on authentic Mexican street food, craft cocktails and tap beer.

There isn’t much to say about this place except that the food is incredibly good with the option of an open kitchen where you can see the chefs cooking and making churros and tacos right before you. The casual feel of the counter seating or tables is much welcomed and fun and makes things pretty cosy. It’s a little like eating at refined fast food place but with way better decor, excellent quality food and drinks. It’s definitely one your list. Unfortunately they don’t take reservations so get there around 6pm if you want to have an evening meal at a decent time. Testament to XOCO’s food is the fact that it’s always super busy!!

The Margarita contains Real del Valle Tequila and fruity orange Liqueur. Alternatively, try the OFF COLOR BREWING Beer for tacos. For mains, the roasted veg enchiladas are incredible and made with homemade tortillas, roasted guajillo chile sauce, artisan Jack, fresco cheese, onions and coriander. Of course you can’t leave without dessert which simply has to come in the form of the traditional churros with the caramel cajeta sauce

Kama

A contemporary Indian restaurant located in the hip Wicker Park, bringing diners a twist on the usual classic Indian dishes brought to Chicago by a collaboration between Chef Vikram Singh and his father Manmohan Singh. All dishes are made from scratch and with the freshest of ingredients which really does come through on the overall taste and flavours.

The decor is dim lighting and a cosy feel with the bar running down one side and tables on the floor and side. The staff are friendly adn attentive and great at making suggestions based on your preferences or dietary requirements.

Dishes also complement the craft cocktail menu, which also combines a great fusion of Indian and American flavours on the signature cocktails menu. the also do mocktails, craft beers and wines.

Kama has a charcoal tandoor grill so we recommend you try the naans as they’re beautifully soft and melt-in-the-mouth. Big bold flavours dominate at Kama

Be-lavie Recommendation: Start with a Watermelon Smash, a cocktail containing mezcal. lavender syrup, ginger and lime. We started with a north indian style samosa (thicker pastry) filled with potatoes and veg accompanied by two chutneys, green coriander and tamarind. For mains, we shared the Ravioli alla Makhani Vodka (homemade scratch ravioli, paneer, mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan, fenugreek, spinach, vodka makhani sauce, basil) and the Malai Kofta in a tomato sauce. We’s suggest a naan between two and a small bowl of plain raice. The Chai tiramisu for two is a nice sweet end with a difference.

Having a Bib Gourmand with a proud mention in the Michelin Guide, Bloom’s chef / owner, Rodlfo Cuadros (of Amaru) and his alert team,  transform the humble vegetable into something you would never think is possible.

London House Chicago

Located on the 22 nd and 23 rd floor of The London House Hotel by Hilton’s Curio Collection, is the rooftop bar that you NEED to visit. It has the most perfect aerial views of the Chicago Riverwalk but is parallel to one of Chicago’s most iconic masterpieces in terms of architecture, The Wrigley Building.

Whether you come here for a sundowner or dinner with the twinking lights of the district or visit during the day, the view are insane, as are the food and drinks. It’s table service so all you need to do is sit back and relax and admire the surroundings.

Markets With Vegetarian Friendly Food Stalls

As with most major cities, if you are staying in Chicago for a little longer than a few days, you may want to explore some of the city’s markets to buy fresh produce. With such a wonderful global population living in Chicago there are lots of different kinds of ingredients and foods to sample at the markets.

Although there are many markets in Chicago, selling everything from antiques to clothing, we’ve included those below that have more of a foodie focus.

Markets are also a great place to pick up picnic items to set you up for a day of exploring.

Logan Square Farmer’s Market

With stalls set up along a portion of Logan Square’s historic boulevard, vendors come here from far and wide, such as Wisconsin and Michigan.

As well as artisan made products, there is a big focus on fruit and vegetables as well as dishes being cooked to order at food stalls.

This one’s been around for around 20 years and has grown to have at least 55 vendors. Draws to this market include the fresh fruit, vegetables and other produce but also the food stands and their fresh made to order cuisine.

Popular vendors include Gayle V’s, best ever grilled cheese and cookies and carnitas, serving their famous chilli, tacos, sandwiches, and cookies.

Gratuities Culture in Chicago

As with most American cities there is a gratuities culture in Chicago, which first time visitors may not be aware of, especially if travelling from Europe where ethos is primarily non existence.

Often food bill receipts will have a suggested amount to tip, such as 15%, 20%. 35%. This can add a substantial amount to your food bill at the top end. You should pay what you think is right and what you feel reflects the service you received in the restaurant.

Many establishments payment machines also have the option of ‘no tip’ and it’s always a good idea to feed back your concerns to the staff if something wasn’t to your satisfaction within reason.

Chicago truly is a melting pot of flavours which incorporates American food as well as the international influences of settlers to the area such as Mexican, Puerta Rican, Indian cuisines and so much more. Although at first we thought it may be a little difficult to hunt down vegetarian friendly food places, we were blown away by the amount of high end as well as great value restaurants that were dedicated to vegetarian and vegan food.

As a top tip if you’re apprehensive, just email or call ahead the particular restaurant you have in mind and check the menu and what they offer. Many will accommodate you for sure if they know in advance and can have their chefs rustle up something from fresh ingredients. We hope this guide is helpful in aiding you with scoping out some of the best vegetarian friendly food in Chicago. The best part is that many of the restaurants don’t just specialise in veggie friendly cuisine but that you can dine in as part of a group where everyone is catered for and the vegetarians or vegans have food that is on par with the others.
