A Northamptonshire village set amongst the backdrop of a striking viaduct, by the name of Harringworth lies close to the Rutland border. As you enter the village one of the dominating structures that overwhelms you is the Welland Viaduct, amidst the backdrop of lush green countryside and limestone architecture. Although a small village, Harringworth has a real community vibe with a beautiful church, village hall, barns converted into quaint businesses and a lovely outdoor cafe. The perfect village stop nestled in the Northamptonshire countryside. Popular with cyclists and tourists alike.

  • Car: The best way to reach Northamptonshire is by car especially due to the location of Harringworth.
  • Train: The closest travel by rain would involve arriving and departing form close-by train stations such as Oakham, Corby, Wellingborough or Markey Harborough and then either hiring a car to Harringworth or booking a taxi. More train and coach times are available at Omio

The Best Time to Visit Harringworth

Harringworth is lovely to visit all year around with a different landscape with the seasons but early summer is particularly beautiful. The village is filled with beautiful flowers and foliage. There are some great walks around the village which would best be enjoyed in the warm summer months and the village. pub, Spokes cafe is a great place to grab a coffee and they do some very delicious sweet and savoury treats.

How to Get Around the Village

Harringworth is pretty small, and you can walk around it very easily in no time at all. There are also many walks around the village to admire the surrounding countryside and you can head to the famous reservoir known and Rutland Water or even Deene Park.

How Long to Visit

Harringworth is ideal to visit for a day or can even make a good half day visit if you’re visiting the county of Rutland or Northampton and fancy seeing many village and towns within the county.

The Best of Harringworth Village

Welland Valley Viaduct

The single most striking feature when you visit Harringworth is the Viaduct. It stretched nearly three quarter of a mile and has 82 arches, measuring 70 feet high. It was built in the times of the steam train to carry the former Midland railway across the picturesque Welland valley and he enchanting waters and meadows of the River Welland.

Harringworth was recorded in the Doomsday Book however it was known as Harringeworde back then and the Manor of Harringworth was owned by William de Cantelope.

The Manor House

In the late 13th century the manor was passed to the La Zouche family who eventually sold it to Francis Foxley and upon his death the Manor of Harringworth was sold to Moses Tyron who lived there until he passed in 1652.

By the mid 18th century, no one was prepared to take on the manor and it was sadly demolished due to its bad state, but for the fishpond. It is believed that manor cottages may have a part of the original manor.

Today Harringworth’s Manor house dates back from the 17th century and is a stunning seven bedroom Grade II listed property, made from local limestone and stone mullion windows. A stunning French-styled fountain sits in the entrance and looks like a property that wouldn’t look out of place in the Provence lavender searching fields!

The Church

In the 13th century, the Norman church of St. John the Baptist was said to be one of the largest churches in the county, which was later topped with a broach spire in the 14th century.

If you love the sheer architecture of churches, then a wander around St John the Baptist is a must! Many of it’s features are Romanesque, with stunning windows, treasures and sits in a peaceful area of the village surrounded by tombs and graves and towards the back of the Churchland there is also a memorial worth a visit.

Walking into the village there are many fine examples of limestone buildings and thatched cottages with the Harringworth Cross standing tall amongst the village finery.

The White Swan

The local watering hole, The White Swan, dates back to the 16th century and is a former coaching Inn donning many original features.

Walks Around Harringworth

The Closest accommodation option for Harringworth is a 2 minute drive away in the village of Seaton. The George & Dragon is a traditional English village pub which also has a Bed & Breakfast. The have three comfortable rooms aptly named The Hare, The Pheasant and The Stag.

Rooms are cosy and homely and there’s a real village pub feel to this beautiful stone English Inn. You don’t have to go far for breakfast either. It’s the perfect base to explore teh area and you’ll be sure to be met with a drink on your return.

The Old Pheasant Restaurant Bar & Rooms

A 6 mins drive from Harringworth is the village of Glaston, which is home to another country Pub, restaurant, bar and rooms, The Old Pheasant. There is a choice of 5 ensuite rooms here, including family room options all with WIFI and ensuite facilities. Food is served on site so no need to travel far as well as great ale and drinks.

the rooms are pretty clean and quite homely with tea and coffee making facilities and are very good value and have the most friendly village setting.

      Harringworth is really beautiful! A lot of the area has stoned houses and so much great architecture typical to the villages of teh area, plus some great little shop stops too!

    I love the photo of the Viaduct! It looks so impressive in the middle of all the nature. I would love to visit just because of it but then all the beauty in the village too! The limestone property, the local eggs (my husbands mother sell free range eggs too) and the cake ???????? Beautiful!
