7 SUSTAINABLE BOUTIQUE HOTELS IN TUNISIA (& LUXURY GUESTHOUSES)
Last Updated on 2nd March 2026 by Bejal
During the planning stages of our 2 week Tunisia itinerary, we were adamant on scoping out sustainable boutique hotels and guesthouses that offer a refined way to experience the country while staying true to its local roots. We found that these thoughtfully designed stays are locally owned, use local products, and deliver a more personal, authentic connection to Tunisian culture and it’s people.. We opted for choosing sustainable boutique hotels in Tunisia as well as guesthouses, which really meant we could experience meaningful luxury while ensuring our money went into the local economy, supporting communities and traditions that make each stay unique. Read on to discover.

What are Sustainable Boutique Hotels & Luxury Guesthouses?
Firstly, let’s address what we mean by luxury because it means different things to different people. Luxury for us is not how shiny or posh the hotel looks, or that we need to have the biggest room or suite in the hotel, the latest technology, it’s not even about the hotel staff waiting hand and foot on us or even taking care of our every need, in fact, we dislike that a lot! For us, luxury means the opportunity to travel at all! That may also be deemed a privilege; with British passports, we are well aware of our passport privilege placement in the world of travel.
Boutique hotels and guesthouses to us is very much about locally owned, locations that are remote or right in the hub of the community that it supports, locally made furnishings in comfortable small boutique hotels and guesthouses, individuality, seasonal food from the surroundings, experiences with the local community and guides that are from the country we’re visiting. We place priority on experiential when it comes to hotels. Unique stays, privacy and a service delivered with a personal or bespoke touch.
Tunisia is traditionally known for its big seafront resorts run by international chains, which generally sway towards family or resort-style travel. They are good value for money and offer a great service.
What Does ‘Sustainable’ Mean in Terms of Tunisia’s Boutique Hotels & Guesthouses
For our 14 day Tunisia itinerary, where we traversed the North, central and Southern regions of the country, we opted for a mix of locally owned boutique hotels and very small guesthouses, one with only three rooms.
Sustainable focus in Tunisia’s accommodation is still being developed, but there are many things that they are doing right already. In this article, we’ve included what we perceive as ‘sustainable focus’ based on the above points we’ve mentioned about locally-owned accommodation. Green certifications are useful and commendable, but not always necessary or affordable for smaller establishments.
In conclusion, sustainable luxury matters in Tunsia because…
Choosing sustainable boutique hotels in Tunisia and guesthouses means travelling with intention. These properties are often locally owned, use local products, and provide deeply personal experiences that large hotels simply can’t offer. Most importantly, the money we spend goes back into the local economy, supporting families, preserving heritage, and ensuring tourism benefits communities rather than replacing them.
7 Sustainable Boutique Hotels & Guesthouses In Tunisia
Here are 7 of the sustainable stays we experienced in Tunisia during our trip.
#1. Dar Said
- Where in Tunisia: Sidi Bou Said
- Type: Boutique Hotel

Perched high above the Mediterranean with views of the mountains and the ancient city of Carthage in the distance, sits a nineteenth century residence, Dar Said Hotel, with 24 en suite rooms decorated with antique chandeliers, stucco work, Turkish-style bathrooms, plus inner open courtyards that provide an authentic Tunisian house experience. There is also an on-site Hammam service, an outdoor pool and stunning bourgainvillea filled gardens.

SEA VIEW SUITE, INNER COURTYARD, ENTRANCE & SWIMMING POOL AT DAR SAID
The inner open courtyard has rooms off it, as does the small, quirky little communal areas with seating to just relax and enjoy the splendour of the house.
They serve a delicious continental breakfast and additional cooked to order eggs and other items. Our room had sea views, which served as a great private viewing platform for a wonderful sunrise every morning.

We stayed here for 3 nights as we used Sidi Bou Said as a base whilst exploring the surrounding ancient ruins and the capital city of Tunis.

Things to Do From Sidi Bou Said
#2. Dar Alouini
- Where in Tunisia: Kairouan.
- Type: Luxury Guesthouse.

SWIMMING POOL & COURTYARD AT DAR ALOUINI
This upscale guesthouse is located within the walls of the Kaiorouan’s UNESCO World Heritage listed medina (that is just one of many UNESCO Heritage sites in Tunisia). The guesthouse is located on two floors with renovation reflecting both Arabian and Andalucian architectural styles. It has stunning Tunisian tilework, with each of the nine traditional luxurious suites named after a flower. We stayed in room one on the first floor, featuring all the mod cons but in an understated way with decor that has been inspired by Tunisian Ottoman, and eighteenth-century French design.

SUITE DETAILS AT DAR ALOUINI
All suites at Dar Alouini have seating areas, inlaid furniture, leading out into a central courtyard. We loved the terrace, which has to be the guesthouses knock-out feature. It has lovely views over Kairouan’s medina and is the perfect sunset spot. There is also a swimming pool on the ground floor, as well as a hammam and sauna. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to use these facilities, but if you’re staying for longer, then we’d suggest booking in.

DAIR ALOUINI FRONT DOOR, BATH AMENITIES, & SEATING AREA IN SUITE ONE
We love the extra mile they go with nice personal touches, such as leaving trays of fruit juices, a platter of fresh fruit and Tunisian sweets.

Things To Do From Kairouan
We think Kairouan is the perfect overnight one day destination, we’ve detailed some unique things to do in our guide on the holy city.
#3. The Mora
- Where in Tunisia: Tozeur.
- Type: Boutique Hotel (resort style).

The Mora is a boutique luxury hotel made up of rooms and villas right in the heart of the Southern Tunisian desert, surrounded by an oasis on the outskirts of Tozeur. The location of The Mora is remote and allows guests to unwind, take in the splendour of the desert and focus on wellbeing, but still has the usual mod cons, although we think you’ll want to fully immerse yourself in the amenities on offer.

PRIVATE PLUNGE POOL, WINDOW SEAT, & OUTDOOR SHOWER
The hotel has two restaurants, serving Asian cuisine as well as traditional Tunisian, and there is a bar for light snacks. The complex take0 son a resort like appearance with a wellness centre, pools, dry gardens and a gym.

DISHES AT THE ASIAN RESTAURANT AT THE MORA
We were lucky enough to stay in one of the Sahara desert facing villas at the edge of the hotel with magnificent views of the sunrise each morning. Our villa was huge and self-contained, made from a local style that just seemed to blend in with the desert surroundings. The villa has a terrace, with a fire pit, outdoor seating, a lounge, a drinks station, a bedroom with floor to ceiling windows, a bathroom with bath, shower and an outdoor shower and full-size toiletries.

Things To Do From Tozeur?
#4. Camp Abdelmoula, Tembaine, Sahara
- Where in Tunisia: Tembaine, Sahara.
- Type: Sahara Tented Camp.

With a desert location overlooking the Temabiane mountains and sands of the Grand Erg Oriental, a two and a half hour drive from a town, Camp Abdelmoula champions simple living with no internet connection, therefore allowing you to disconnect from the world, relax and savour the magic of the heart of the desert.
Guests are picked up from a designated central location in Tozeur by drivers from the camp and driven to the very remote location of the camp. The drive includes travelling through the desert and going off piste as sand dunes settle differently daily.
Be-lavie Tip: If you suffer from car travel sickness, make provisions with medication as this journey is one bumpy ride.
There are around 50 tents at Camp Abdelmoula, ours had an ensuite with shower, basin, toilet, electricity, as well as a lovely outdoor terrace to sit and watch the night sky. Those tents without bathrooms have access to ‘ablution’ blocks with hot and cold running water, plus showers and toilets.

CAMP ABDE;MOULA FROM HILL & TENTS
Tents have warm blankets, duvets, colourful local rugs, comfy beds and hooks for clothing, with the whole camp being lit up with lanterns in the night.
As well as stargazing a popular activity is climbing up the hill to watch the sunset and rise in opposite directions! The sunrise is definitely worth the early morning wake-up call.

CAMP FIRE & SUNRISE AT CAMP ABDELMOULA
In the evenings, guests can gather around a campfire where local bread is made and then onto a delicious three course local dinner in a communal tent and in the morning a Tunisian traditional breakfast is served.

SAND DUNES IN THE DESERT & SOLAR PANELS AT CAMP ABDELMOULA
Be-lavie Tip: Take warm layers for evenings, as it can get rather cold in the desert, no matter the season.

- The family operates the camp with minimal environmental impact.
- There are solar panels for heating water.
- Tunisian local tents and guides.

- Sustainability places a big focus on ensuring the desert landscape is protected.

#5. L’Auberge de Tamezret
- Where in Tunisia: Tamezret, Matmata.
- Type: Berber-style Guesthouse.

This three room guesthouse is run by a charming husband and wife team, Patrick and Sabrine, in the sleepy hilltop Amazigh (Berber) village of Tamazret. The centuries old rustic Amazigh house has been sympathetically restored and offers guests an opportunity to experience Amazigh living. We chose it for its remote location and laid back stay option.

SUITE TOUMAIR WITH BEDROOM, BATHROOM & TERRACE AT L’AUBERGE DE TAMAZRET
Our room at L’Auberge de Tamezret was Chambre Tourmadir, on the first floor of the property, which is accessed by an external staircase. It has a cave-like, quaint structure from inside, complete with local linens, colourful Tunisian carpets, a very comfy bed and seating area. There is also a lovely long terrace, which is perfect for seeing the sunset from.
Take the stairs down into the basement of the room, and there’s an unexpected bathroom with fluffy towels, double sinks, a shower and luxurious toiletries. The room has lovely sideboards and antique style dressers, which complement the styling.

WINE CELLAR & BREAKFAST SET-UP AT L’AUBERGE DE TAMEZRET
Each evening, the hosts cook a three course meal which is eaten in the cave-like dining room via the kitchen. It’s a wonderful time to connect with other travellers (seats six in total), unwind and enjoy the locally sourced delicious food. Our favourite feature is the incredible wine cellar stocking a mix of wines, but we particularly loved the Tunisian Syrah variety!
A beautiful breakfast spread is presented in the communal space each morning, which is a leisurely affair and sets you up for the day.

** Amazigh refers to the ‘free people’ of North Africa, the native people of the land. The term ‘Berber’ was given to these people during Greek and Roman times, derived from Barbaros, meaning ‘outsider’ or ‘uncivilised’. Amazigh in the native language, is a beautiful way of interpreting that they were once nomadic or ‘free-people’ as they are today.
Be-lavie Tip: Please note that due to the nature of the property, doors and ceilings are low, so you will require ducking, but also dexterity is required for climbing the stairs upto the first floor rooms with low sides. Guests need to take their own luggage to their rooms (it’s a guesthouse), so only carry what you need!
Sustainable / Local Features
- A great example of community-based tourism.
- Built into the mountains using traditional methods and restored by the current owners, Patrick & Sabrine.
- L’auberge de Tamezret sources food locally and employs residents from the village.
- Guests can learn about Berber culture, Cuisine and sustainable rural life.

Things to do from Matmata?
#6. Dar Dhiafa, Djerba
- Where in Tunisia: Djerba.
- Type: Boutique Hotel but with guesthouse charm.

DAR DHIAFA FRONT DOOR & POOL
Dar Dhiafa hotel is located in the historic village of Erriadh, close to Djerbahood and is a traditional courtyard property where four houses have been renovated beautifully to form a calming boutique hotel. Hidden behind the front studded doors, it’s hard to believe that this calm tardis like oasis exists. Think Moorish style arches, weighty, gnarled wooden doors, Arabian antiques and artefacts, comfy seating and atmospheric lighting in hidden alcoves, Bougainvillaea draped over doors and windows, and picturesque courtyards with relaxing pastel hues.

DAR DHIAFA DETAILS
The boutique guest house hotel has 12 ensuite rooms, all individually designed in a local style with linens, cushions and throws decorated with Tunisian handwoven techniques and colourful rugs. Artwork is by local painters on the island or close by in the Southern parts of the country.
We had a beautiful suite with a seating area, bedroom and large bathroom which opened up onto a bright communal courtyard. We loved how discreet but excellent the service was at Dar Dhiafa and how helpful and accommodating the staff are at showing off their beautiful hotel, island and culture.

COURTYARD SUITE AT DAR DHIAFA
The hotel has a really good restaurant that specialises in Tunisian and Mediterranean food. We would recommend making a reservation, as it does get very busy, and they offer some great vegetarian and vegan items that are off the menu too.

#7. La Badira
- Where in Tunisia: Hammamet
- Type: Luxury Boutique Hotel

A contemporary, modern adults only boutique style beach resort hotel on the outskirts of Hammamet. We once read that La Badira was owned by a local Tunisian lady, and liked her story so we had to stay here when we visited Hammamet.

This peaceful and calm hotel has minimal, white decor with glimmers of classic Tunisian architecture. There are 130 very spacious suites which look out onto the sea, with the Noor suites which also have a whirlpool on their terraces.

LA BADIRA ROOMS, RECYCLING & BEACH
Our room had everything we would need for a luxurious yet mindful stay, from coffee machines to full size toiletries, fluffy white robes, very comfortable linens and beds and of course plenty of space!

SEA BIEW SUITE WITH PLUGE POOL AT LA BADIRA
The hotel’s garden leads onto two separate beach areas as well as two swimming pools with an infinity-like design. For those into their wellbeing, the Clarins spa offers a lot of treatments, including relaxing massages and fitness lovers, yes, there’s a gym.
There are several places to dine in the hotel as well as bars to enjoy drinks in cosy spots. The traditional Tunisian restaurant is perfect for those who wish to try some local dishes, and the Mediterranean restaurant is great for vegetarians like us, as they have so many choices!

MEDITERRANEAN RESTAURANT & BREAKFAST AT LA BADIRA
There is also a boutique at La Badira that sells a number of unique local pieces of clothing and homewares.
La Badira is a hotel that may be luxurious, but it’s understated and comfortable and places great importance on sustainable practices. They have their policies and projections for the future openly available on their website, should you fancy a read.
Be-lavie Tip: If you stay at La Badira, we recommend you make the most of the hotel and use the amenities, as it’s really worth using it for at least a day to just relax on the sun loungers, cabanas, beach area and infinity pools.

Things to Do From Hammamet
For a full list of things t do in Hammamet, especially during the winter monthsm have a read of our 3 day guide or why not book one of teh day tours below.
Tips For Selecting a Sustainable Boutique Hotel in Tunisia
- Look for small family-run guesthouses at the destinations you’re visiting. These will tend to be residences that have been restored and promote local heritage, culture and cuisine.
- Check websites for what local practices the hotel or guesthouse takes part in. Bear in mind, not all hotels have accreditations and awards. Tunisia is not fully there yet, but standards are improving with the placement of more attention on supporting the local economy.
- Try to avoid opting for the big international brands or hotels in the Zone Touristique, as they offer great package holiday deals but do not necessarily ensure the money is going back into the local economy.
- When it comes to eating at your hotel or guesthouse, opt for local Tunisian dishes as these are made from seasonal, local ingredients and will help you learn about the culture through the cuisine.
- Many remote locations will have more traditional guesthouses, take full advantage of the communal dinners and evenings spent with the hosts. It’s a great example of community led tourism and a way to learn about the country and its people.
- If you have excellent service in hotels / guesthouses, feel free to leave a tip if you can. The room attendants, waiters and front of house staff would be very grateful.
Sustainable Focus Stays in Tunisia Round-Up
Sustainable focus stays in Tunisia shows us that travel can be both meaningful and luxurious, depending on your idea of the word. Staying in locally owned properties that source local food, celebrate regional craftsmanship, and offer authentic experiences allows you to travel in a way that respects both the people and place. These hotels and guesthouses don’t just offer a place to sleep; they invite us into Tunisia’s stories, landscapes, and communities, leaving a positive impact long after we return home.
