How to Look For Sustainable Hotels in Washington DC?
Sometimes it can be quite daunting finding a hotel that ticks eco-friendly boxes, so we’ve simplified it here to help with the jargon you may see on hotel websites.
A true sustainable hotel will always have a sustainability policy document. This ensures that the accommodation provider has had some sort of certification from a reliable organisation and has received a Green Certificate. One of the bodies that certify this include, EarthCheck LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and will highlight the specific commitments that the hotels have implemented and also plan to work towards going forwards. Washington DC does have a few LEED hotels.
Sometimes it can be difficult to locate this information, therefore the best thing to do is contact the hotel, who will almost always point you in the right direction or will put you in touch with their sustainability manager.
Sustainability features of eco-friendly focussed hotels in Washington DC include LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design); water conservation systems and customer programmes; guests opting not to change and wash linens daily; locally sourced, organic food in their restaurants that reduces waste, energy efficient lighting and appliances, such as lights on a timer or sensor that turn off, as well as sustainable bath and shower products that are full size and refillable as opposed to mini plastic bottles.
What Neighbourhoods to Stay in?
Prior to our visit to DC, we collated a list of hotels by vibrant neighbourhoods in the city, that had a great mix of culture, heritage, fun things to do, street art as well as delicious places to eat. There are some fantastic vegan and vegetarian friendly places to eat in Washington DC, so we included these as part of our neighbourhood selection.
How big are Boutique Hotels In Washington DC?
Unlike many other countries in the world, we’ve found that when it comes to the USA, boutique hotels can be a little on the larger size than in Europe, for example! So expect some of these to have around 150-200 rooms but they are still classed as boutique style hotels and they have a wonderful level of personalisation with service and amenities too.
Are Sustainable Hotels Expensive in Washington DC?
The hotels featured in this articles span mid-range ($$) to luxury ($$$). The price estimate has been included under the ‘details’ section for each hotel. We selected these hotels with travellers in mind and the best places for them to stay to be quite close to all the sights and restaurants that would be of interest during a visit to the city. There are of course hotels located further away from the more central neighbourhoods, closer to the airport for example, however the commute would be a lot longer and probably cost more adding to the less sustainable factor of getting a car or Uber.

Here’s our round-up of 6 sustainable hotels in Washington DC by neighbourhood with each area in Washington DC having so many eco=friendly things to do.
Downtown
The Eaton DC
- Great choice for: Couples, creatives, travellers, wellbeing enthusiasts.
- Love the look of this hotel? Check Rates & Book Eaton DC

We stayed at this incredibly progressive hotel during our DC visit and loved the mission driven hospitality concept. It has around 209 rooms, and spans over ten floors right in the heart of downtown DC. It is one of two Eaton hotels, the other being in Hong Kong.
The Eaton DC definitely is more than just a hotel where hospitality meets community, culture and creativity. It’s an inclusive space that welcomes locals as well as travellers to collaborate and create through a social place which is judgement free and accessible to all.

The theme of activism plays a major role here as right in front of the elevator doors, you’ll see photographs of protestors and ‘whites only’ signs from past decades. The progressive library just behind the reception and lobby area to pre-revolutionary portraits of ‘white’ senior figures and BLK NEWS, depicting a version of Kahlil Joseph’s video installation that was first seen as a premier at the Venice Biennale.

The hotel is not affiliated to any political parties but they have hosted marches and campaigns and we loved the founder’s, Katherine Lo, philosophy of employing DC born and bred with a background in music, arts and activism, much like herself!
The Eaton DC has a dedicated sustainability committee which ensures there is open dialogue from within and to update their staff on policies and efforts.
The ground floor also houses the Eaton DC’s own radio station, at the front of the property where every night you can see activity from hosts in the city through the red neon lights of the studio.

Towards the back of the ground floor, there is an art exhibition by African American artist, Rashed Ali Nuhammed with sculptures and other works along the curated corridor space with a VT explaining the origins and thought behind his work, ‘Through the Veil, Currants of the Unseen’.

When it comes to guest rooms, the Eaton does cool very well, rather bohemium we’d say too. Think a shelving unit with a curated collection of Vinyl for the record player, books from their library that have a focus on black authors and design, Himalayan Salt lamp and artwork.

Rooms come equipped with fridges and trays with a kettle, sustainably sourced tea and coffee as well as stir with purpose wooden cutlery sets.

The hotel successfully completed the Eaton DC Queen to King Room conversion and renovation project by which we sustainably renovated 131 hotel rooms over a three year period. Here they repurposed queen headboards to king ones. The project’s aim was to reduce waste, by employing sustainable design, donating lightly used furniture to mutual aid groups allowing opportunities to local communities.

In fact, one of the hotels’ uniform attendants, Marta, converted queen bed throws to king bed size and now they can be found hung over many of the king beds in the hotel.
Bathroom products include full size hand soap, shampoo, conditioner and body cream by Grown Alchemist, a luxury skin care brand that uses a minimum of 94% natural, biocompatible ingredients.

When it comes to wining and dining, there are four places to indulge! Michele’s by Matt Baker (Michelin-starred chef) serving small plates, the Bakers Daughter (also by Matt Baker) is a cafe offering breakfast, coffee, baked goods, prepared foods, gourmet grocery items and Wild days, the rooftop Bar, a cool hangout that’s popular with lcoasl at the weekend and oftern hosts events!
Michele’s at Eaton DC

The Baker’ s Daughter at Eaton DC

Wild Days Rooftop

Behind the Progress Library is Allegory, a speakeasy with a deep rooted story of civil rights activist Ruby Bridges through an Alice in Wonderland & Alice through the Looking Glass narrative.
Ruby was the first African American child to integrate into an all white school in Louisiana in 1960.
A large mural on the wall by Erik Thor Sandberg and the ‘Banned in DC’ cocktail menu, tell Ruby’s story set in a dystopian future DC where books are banned! It covers the themes of social change, bravery & resistance.
Allegory Speakeasy Bar

The dining spots at Eaton DC produce some of their menu ingredients onsite and composts their food waste.
The hotel has a big focus on wellness and has many community events and yoga classes in the dedicated space. There is a business centre and co-working space as well as Eaton Workshop which hosts many community based events and a 50 seat cinema for hosting film previews.

Things to Do in Georgetown
Washington’s oldest neighbourhood, as of 2025, it is 274 years old and was founded in 1751. It predates Washington DC and was part of the town of Maryland after being incorporated into DC in 1871. We spent one full day in Georgetown experiencing it’s old world vibe, attractions and history.
DC’s historic landmarks such as the C&O Canal, Old Stone House, Georgetown University as well as the famous 1972 movie The Exorcist steps on Prospect Road can be found here. There are also a large range of high end shops and boutiques, upscale cafes and restaurants, green spaces and some beautiful real estate.

Look out for a couple of the neighbourhood’s well known murals, The Wave a few roads down from M Street, created as a replica of the 100s Japanese print, ‘The great Wave of Kanagawa, Alma Indigena located at 1564 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Indigenous Wixarika Elder, blue maize and guajillo peppers.
For some trail style walking head to Dunbarton Oaks Park and get some Georgetown views at Book Hill Park. Also head down to the The Waterfront Park for some more green space and places to eat or take a water taxi down the Potamac River to Alexandria.

A few tours that we’d recommend in Georgetown, as part of things to do:
- Taste of Georgetown Walking Tour, – the local guide, will share the history of the neighbourhood with unique anecdotes and carefully selected food tastings in the area. It combines food stops with three tastings of local snacks as well as plenty of photo stops to get a good feel of the area.

Things to do in Adams Morgan
We almost didn’t visit Adams Morgan because we thought it would be all about the night life scene, clubs and bars after dark. However we are glad we spent a few hours on a Sunday morning here!

We experienced a vibrant and diverse area which was filled with great restaurants and creative spaces with live music and artists. If you love live performances and the arts, the DC Arts Center is a must, as is DC’s oldest vintage store, Mercedes Bien Vintage or if you love a good book like us, pop to Lost City Books for a little mooch around. You’ll get a pretty great vibe of the area just by walking up and down 18th Street, keep an eye out for the historic houses around here too.

The area also has some cool street art, we walked by Madam’s Organ Blues Bar of a lady that’s quite controversial as well as a ‘shop small’ mural depicting indie shopping. There’s also a mural at BUL, a Korean Bar & Restaurant. It’s of singer, Aristotle Bruant.

Things to do in Dupont Circle
Dupont circle is filled with cute bars, boutique hotels and bistro style restaurants. It has a really hip, boho chilled vibe about it with it’s centre point being a fountain surrounded by leafy foliage and a point for locals to sit and read, have lunch or use it as a meeting point. We sat here ourselves to take in the rays on an early November day.

Be sure to stroll down 17th street known for its small businesses and vibrant LGTBQ+ community. Stroll along Rainbow Road walkway. We think you could spend all day here and on Sundays they hold the Dupont Circle Farmers market here. Walk up and down Connecticut Street to get a feel for this charming, yet sophisticated neighbourhood. Culture vultures should not miss America’s first museum of modern art, The Phillips Collection.

Street art lovers don’t miss the Amanda Gorman Mural located on 1608 17th Street NW, is of 23 years old Amanda Gorman reading her powerful poem ‘The hill we climb’ at the presidential inauguration in 2021. Spot Embassy’s on Embassy Row, a particular favourite of ours was the Indonesian Embassy with its ornate statues outside the entrance.
