Where is San Diego Located (Map)

San Diego is a Southern Californian City, located in the county with the same name. It’s located on the Pacific ocean and on the USA, Mexico border, hence it’s Mexican influence.

How to Get to San Diego?

Flights 

Most visitors arrive into San Diego International Airport by an international flight or national flight from within the United States.

We opt for direct flights to San Diego from London Heathrow which take roughly 13 hours but American Airlines, United Airlines as well as Virgin Atlantic all have flights from either London Gatwick or Heathrow now.

If travelling within the United States, direct flights are possible with Delta and American Airlines as well as other budget alternatives. 

Trains & Buses

If you are located in another part of California, it is possible to take a train to San Diego. Amtrak, has trains as well as buses which access around 150 destinations in California including San Diego as well as national parks, wineries and beaches. For example the Pacific Surfliner incorporating some of California’s beautiful coastline goes from Los Angeles to San Diego.

How to Get Around San Diego?

Depending on the length of time you are visiting San Diego and the fact that many neighbourhoods and points of interest are scattered around, public transport isn’t always the best. In fact buses can be quite lengthy with multiple stops. We recommend either using apps like Lyft or Uber. It will be far easier as you would be dropped off at the exact destination and payment is easy and secure.

If you are comfortable driving internationally, then our top advice would be to hire a car. Just remember they drive on the right hand side across the pond!

When to Visit San Diego?

San Diego is blessed with some pretty beautiful weather so it is an ideal location to visit all year round. There are only two real season with summer averaging 76°F-78°F (26°C-28°C) and the winter sitting between 66°F-67°F (20°C-22°C). If you’re looking to avoid the crowds then March-April and September-November are great times. July through to September are undoubtedly the hottest months and therefore the busiest. 

It’s good to note that coastal temperatures can be a little lower and mornings can be a little overcast but by lunchtime you’re sure to have glorious blue skies and minimal cloud cover.

Locals describe May as being the most grey and June as being quite gloomy so you may want to avoid those!

We visited around the first week of November and the weather was perfect with temperature averaging around 22-25°C during the day, especially on our latest visits.

How Long to Stay in San Diego?

 This is entirely down to what you plan to do. To get a taste of the neighbourhoods as well as spend some time at the beaches and head up the coast, we’d say five to seven days is a great length of time, especially if you want to take things leisurely and not rush around. After all you are on holiday!

Downtown / Gaslamp Quarter

Best place to stay for: Business travellers, those who like to be near restaurants and nightlife as well as in the heart of San Diego’s historic district. This is the best location for accessibility to many of San Diego’s best neighbourhoods as well as points of interest. It’s pretty close to the business district so perfect for those travelling for work.

The Moxy San Diego, Gaslamp / Downtown.

Style: Good value/ Mid-Range

Moxy hotels are a part of the Marriott group and provide very hip and cool accommodation with industrial style interiors. Think neo lights with eye catching signs, quirky room features as well as comfort. There’s a bar on the ground floor great for drinks, anytime dining and a great breakfast. They also have communal work spaces, a gym, a snack bar, DJ’s at weekends, games in the communal area plus there’s a secret sleep easy cocktail bar, which requires guests to reserve a spot!

Why we love this hotel: Guests can check in at the bar and receive free drink tokens. There’s a great range of house cocktails, beers and other beverages available. Guest rooms also have mini steamers, the hotel also has a communal ironing room. Note the small room accessories like the retro telephone, artwork and desks. The decor is cool, as are the neon signs and the very cool trendy vibe of the place, making Moxy a popular choice for all age ranges. A hotel that oozes quirky from the moment you step in.

The Pendry 

Style: Luxury

Definitely one of Downtown San Diego’s most beautiful luxury hotels, in terms of it’s spacious, light and airy rooms as well as the impeccable service. Rooms and suites also come with huge glass showers and marble finishes with amenities by MiN of NYC.

If you’re a guest at The Pendry, you will be granted priority access to it’s social club, Oxford. The hotels has a good looking pool, wellness spa and fitness centre.

There are also some great restaurants on the ground floor such as Lion fish, Provisional Kitchen and cocktails at Fifth & Rose, all of which we can personally recommend.

Little Italy

Best Place to Stay for: those who want to be close to the airport, access to the harbourfront, love eating Italian and want a community vibe.

Style: Luxury 

Distance to Piazza della Famiglia, Little Italy: seven minutes walk.

One of the newest hotels in Little Italy and is perfect if you love a spot of healthy lifestyle on your holidays as its built into a 28,000 square foot Fit Athletic Club and outdoor swimming pool.

The hotels, 246 luxury rooms are very comfortable with all the latest mod cons and together are water refill stations on each floor. Many have great views of the downtown area and sea via the embarcadero. 

The Above Ash Bar is on the rooftop and as well as offering views over San Diego and the bay, it also serves up cocktails and is the perfect fancy hang out after  a day of sightseeing. 

The Watercolours restaurant inside the hotel specialises in seafood with the coastal location of the city, amongst other things and does great lunch options as well as set menus for dinner.

Porto Vista Hotel

Style: Mid-range

This definitely is a hotel for those who love a bit more fun, colour, and an artistic playful vibe. There are 190 rooms including five suites, which have also been recently refurbished. They are decorated in neutral clean tones with a splash of colour from pieces of art. Some have balconies too.

The hotel features contemporary local and international artists throughout the hotel from their collaboration with 1805 Gallery Director Lauren Story. The murals around the hotel are forever changing and being such a cool vibe to the hotel. 

There is a rooftop ‘spool’ which is a heated mini pool with spa jets and is perfect for hanging out with a good book or just relaxing. The inhouse restaurant, Glass Door serves up locally sourced ingredients in dishes as well as cocktails that can be sipped with panoramic views of the Bay area as well as Little Italy.

Coronado Island

Best place to stay for: Beachside holidays, families, honeymoons, slow travellers abd those who like a small-town community feel. 

Hotel del Coronado (Luxury)

The most famous hotel in San Diego, The Hotel Del Coronado is a historic beachfront hotel oozing with charm. 

An island Constitution and made famous by the 1958 movie, Some like it hot starring Marilyn Monroe, this is a hotel with oodles of charm and impeccable service. It has around 774 rooms scattered in the form of village and Cabana format to mention a few. Originally opened in 1888, the hotel will see it’s final restoration project come to an end in early 2025. 

This hotel is perfect for special occasions, and definitely great for a one off splurge whilst on the island to experience The Dell ambience and walk in the footsteps of movie legends who have stayed here.

1906 Lodge Coronado 

Style: Mid-range

If it’s a beach hotel with quiet, calm romantic vibes you’re looking for, 1906 Lodge Coronado is the best choice for you. It has been beautifully restored and has been on Coronado Island for over a century. 

It’s just a block away from the main shops of Orange Avenue, restaurants and galleries and a short walk away from the beach and the world renown Hotel del Coronado.

1906 Lodge Coronado is more along the European boutique system of only having 17 guest rooms, with each being individually designed. There are seven room categories including Historic lodge King room but we love the idea of the Grand King Spa rooms as they have a spacious living area and a spa bath. 

There is a complimentary happy hour as well as filtered water, coffee, and tea available throughout the day.

We LOVE that again another feature of European style boutique hotels, the breakfast is complimentary with stays. It’s a daily buffet style set up and bottomless mimosas are served from 08:00-09:30. We also heard every afternoon, there are freshly baked biscuits for guests. There is no restaurant but, there’s  a great choice of local places located a block away.

La Jolla

Best Place To Stay for: Holidays, families, a village community spirit, coastal town vibes, an upmarket area feel, surfers, endless sea views.

La Valencia Hotel 

Style: Luxury

Located just across the street from La Jolla Cove, on Prospect Street. It has been here for over 95 years. It’s known for its pink exterior and Spanish tiled tower and is quite the landmark in La Jolla. We’d refer to it more as old world luxury.

Guests can choose form vintage style, old world rooms to suites and villas which are beyond spacious and have ocean, garden or village views.  The hotel has a striking outdoor pool, fitness centre and spa pool.

La Valencia’s prime location in La Jolla makes it perfect for shopping, eating out and discovering the area in more detail. Food and drinks at the hotel represent the flavours of the coast and include; Mediterranean, inspired by the California coast with seasonally driven, locally sourced ingredients; La sala, a beautiful cocktail bar with stunning ocean views, poolside dining as well as in-room dining options.

Pantai Inn 

Style: Mid-range

Pantai Inn, a member of  Small Luxury Hotels of the World,  is a unique boutique hotel which covers a taste of Balinese style accommodation literally steps from the Pacific ocean and many of La Jolla villages amenities. 

Hospitality is said to be very welcoming and reminiscent to that in the East at Pantai Inn, with the decor offering Balinese serenity and a great place to relax. Think spacious suites, equipped with full kitchens, rain shoes as well as large balconies. Handcrafted furnishings and textiles that add a touch of relaxation to the atmosphere of the property.

There is no restaurant service, except for breakfast but guests are in a great location to sample all the restaurants in La Jolla village and the ensuite kitchens are great for cooking. 

WIFI is fast and parking is complimentary which is a bonus.

Neighbourhoods in San Diego

San Diego is a pretty spread out city, let alone county hence why we recommend hiring a car if you do want to get out and see a lot of the surrounding coastline. This is even more pertinent if you have a family as it may well be quite cost effective too.

Having visited a few times, San Diego county has a few cities within it however, there are quite a few neighbourhoods also within San Diego city. Here are some of the main ones, we think as visitors you should add to your itinerary visit, time permitting. 

The Gaslamp Quarter (Downtown)

This historic district, 16 block area, named after the victorian style lamps that light up the streets, truly is the life and soul of San Diego. Centrally located and in waking proximity or has close transport links to many points of interest in the city. The Gaslamp Quarter is full of heritage landmarks, the best restaurants, bars, nightlife as well as some stunning hotels and rooftop. It is also close to East Village where baseball fans can go and watch the San Diego Padres at Petco.

Seaport Village (Downtown)

A very short walk from the Gaslamp Quarter is Seaport Village. This waterfront shopping and dining complex overlooks the bay with its yachts and beautiful sunsets. The complex is home to over 70 shops, restaurants, galleries as well as specialist shops such as artisan locally made clothing, confectionary stores, local breweries to name a few.

Embarcadero (Downtown)

Again not to far a walk from the Gaslamp Quarter and right along the waterfront from Seaport Village is the Embarcadero. It’s a pretty busy cruise ship hub with a row of sea food restaurants and souvenir shops. Seaport is actually a part of the Embarcadero, which is also home to The headquarters. This is a former police command post that has been turned into a hub of upscale eateries and boutique outlets. The area is also well-known for the USS Midway Museum which is a former naval aircraft carrier, where visitors can also experience flight simulators as well as the history of the aircraft carrier ship.

The Best Things to do in Embarcadero 

• Head to the USS Martime Museum and and Maritime Museum of San Diego.
• Take a dinner cruise on a boat or see the city from a different perspective at the waterfront.
• Hang out at Waterfront Park.
• Head to the shops, restaurants and boutiques at The Headquarters (the transformed old Police terminal).
• Take in the playful outdoor sculptures, the ‘coming together’ sculpture as well as the notable ‘Unconditional Surrender’ statue of the Sailor and Nurse kissing.

Little Italy 

Known to be largest Little Italy in the whole of the USA, this 48 block neighbourhood is full of historical insights about the Italian communities as well as some of the best restaurants in the city. Wine bars, celebrity chef headed restaurants, galleries, local breweries and the famous weekly Saturday Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market. This pedestrian friendly, is very close to San Diego Airport and one of the city’s gems.

• Go to the Saturday Mercato Farmer;s Market. 
• Look for the recipe tables at Amici Park.
• Pop to Architectural Salvage for reclaimed household goods.

• Go to the San Diego Firehouse Museum. 
• Relax at the Piazza della Famiglia.
• Pop by the Little Italy Food Hall.

Balboa Park & Hillcrest

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is San Diego’s 1,200 acre historic and cultural park which was placed in reserve in 1835. The site of the park is actually one of the oldest sites in the United States dedicated to recreation activities for the public.

At Balboa park, you’ll find the following museums:

• The San Diego Natural History Museum, the NAT (wonders of Southern California).
• The San Diego Museum of Art, artworks, ranging from Spanish and Italian masters to South Asian paintings, plus 19th and 20th-century American paintings and sculptures.
• The Museum of U’s, unique interactive experiences.

There are park and gardens here to suit all tastes and ages including children’s activities and play area, carousels, a miniature train, San Diego Zoo as well as an elaborate and ornate Japanese Friendship Garden. 

There are a number of places to eat at the park too from cafes perfect for cake and coffee to artisanal dishes at Artefact and an American Style Grill. You will be spoilt for choice with the array of food available here.

Hillcrest 

Located North North West of Balboa Park, Hillcrest is a cool bohemian uptown part of San Diego known for it’s LGBTQ+ community and the location for San Diego’s annual Pride celebrations. One of the most prominent streets in Hillcrest is University Avenue which is home to many international restaurants specialising in Vietnamese, Himalayan, Thai and Indian food as  well as being a hub of great cafes perfect for brunch. Here you’ll also find some cool second hand and vintage clothing stores and they have a Farmer’s Market selling artisan produce as well as a variety of goodie items and blooms.

Be-lavie Tip; Farmer’s Market is held every Sunday from 09:00-14:00.

The Best Things to do In Balboa Park & Hillcrest

• Spend a day at Balboa Park and take part in the activities on offer as well as the  museums and gardens, as described below. 
• Walk around Hillcrest.
• Dine at one of the international restaurants. 
• Check out the vintage clothing stores.
• On Sunday head to the local Farmer’s Market. 
• If visiting in June, experience the Pride parade.

North Park

One of our favourite neighbourhoods to the North of San Diego with an eclectic and cool mix of arty and community vibes, Think unusual stores, musical theatre, coffee shops, craft breweries, laid back dining, street art and a very hip and colourful crowd.

The area between University Avenue and 30th Street is said to be ‘the best beer neighbourhood in the nation thanks to the locality of numerous craft beer outlets such as North Park Brewing and Thorn Street. Beer. Craft cocktails are also quite popular. Our personal favourite is Seek Brewing who also have numerous food stalls just outside (independently owned from the brewery)!

The Best Things to Do in North Park

• Head to one of the many breweries.
• North park self guided Mural Trail.
• Check out the North Park Observatory, a restored theatre.
• Watch Jazz at Queen Bee’s Art & Cultural Centre.
• Don’t miss the Thursday North Park Farmer’s Market.
• Head to the boutique homeware stores like, Lovesong Coffee & Market or look for second hand bookstores and vintage clothing shops like Day to day Vintage.
• Get active with hiking, climbing, biking and bird waiting at Juniper Canyon Trail.
• Grab a coffee at one of the cool coffee spots like Communal coffee or Dark Horse Coffee Roaster.
• Eat at one of the many cool eateries in the neighbourhood Underbelly serving delicious Ramen.

Where to Eat & Drink in North Park

• Coffee & Breakfast: Communal coffee, Dark Horse Coffee Roaster, Caffe Calabria, Lovesong Cafe.
• Lunch & Dinner: Crazee Burger (use of interesting meats but do veggie and vegan options), Tribute Pizza, Atypical waffle Company. Smoking Goat (French & Californian Food).

Mission Valley & Old Town

Old Town

The Old Town is for those who want to know more about San Diego’s origins. There are many well-preserved historic buildings and museums that pay homage to the town of San Diego from 1820-1870. It’s the hub of the first Spanish settlement in San Diego, which is reflected in the buildings around the area. The famous Old Town Trolley Tours have a boarding location here and if it’s your first time, we’d advise booking a tour of the main sights with them it’s a fun way to travel getting on and off at different points of interest in San Diego.

Coronado 

Located just across the waters from San Diego’s downtown and accessible via the San Diego Coronado Bridge or a 15, minute ferry ride away, Coronado is a small family friendly peninsula known world wide.

The Northern part of the island is home to the US Navy Seals base with much of the activities for visitors being focussed around the Ferry Landing Pier and Coronado Beach. This laid back island has many famous connections including the 1958 movie, Some Like it hot being filmed at the Hotel Dell Coronado, starring Marilyn Monroe as well as the island’s connection to the Wizard of Oz author, L Frank Baum.

Point Loma – Ocean Beach

This area is scattered with beach towns and has a very hippy boho coastal vibe with yoga centres and well being businesses. The area has a deep history, great views to admire  and a marina waiting to be discovered if you are visiting. 

At Point Loma is the notable, Cabrillo National Monument, built to mark the explorer, Juan Rodriguez. There are some wonderful views of the bay and ocean here.

The area also has a fulling working marina which offers boat tours for various activities. Liberty Station is a up and coming art and design hub which combines historic architecture, shopping eateries, community meets at this former Navy Training Centre.

Mission Beach -Pacific Beach

Although it’s easy to escape the bars by heading to North Pacific Beach, where you can catch the surf, partake in the coffee culture with the breeze of the sea air. Belmont Park at Mission beach is where a lot of the action in terms of amusement parks with plenty of rides to keep adults and children entertained.
