Eco-friendly Practices

The UK’s first 100% vegan hotel, dedicated to ‘ethical luxury’, Soarsa 1875 is located in Scotland and owned by mother and son team, Sandra and  Jack Mclaren-Stewart.

It’s housed in a restored 19th century, mansion house, surrounded by two acres of woodland overlooking the picturesque town of Pitlochry, in close proximity to Loch Ness. We stayed at Saorsa 1875 for 2 nights when we visited Pitlochry one autumn and found it really relaxing and laid back.

The entire hotel is completely free of any animal products including the upcycled furniture, toiletries, energy and a plant-based menu that changes regularly featuring organic and foraged delights to avoid food waste.

The boutique residence has 11 rooms, featuring statement wallpapers, soft furnishings where wool, silk and leather have been replaced with linen, cotton, velvet and manmade fibres and down-free duvets. All are locally sourced or second hand.

The Pig on the Beach, Dorset

Eco-friendly hotels in the UK: The Pig on The Beach, Dorset. bejal sitting wearing a grey dressing gown outside the Bovey accommodation

Eco-friendly Practices

The Pig Hotels (The Pig on the Beach being one of their coastal locations) that aim to work with small suppliers and have a life long ethos of leaving their patch on this planet better than they found it! It’s definitely one of our favourite brands for eco-friendly hotels in the UK.

Their incredible Studland Bay location, can see as far out as the Isle of White and comprises of accommodation in the main manor house as well as outbuildings like the Bothy, and a few cute and cosy Shepherd’s huts. We stayed at The Bothy during our visit and love dit’s location beside the kitchen garden. The ethos at The Pig on the Beach and all of the Pig Hotels is that whatever they can’t grow and rear themselves, is sourced locally within a 25 mile radius.

They are continually looking to reduce the hotels impact on the environment, from bottling water on-site, cutting down food waste and packaging, seeking out sustainable suppliers and charity partners, beekeeping or improving composting skills. Fruit and vegetable are home grown at the hotel, therefore there is no food waste or packaging. They also harvest their own eggs and sawdust from a sustainable Yurt company is used. The food is absolutely delicious and seasonal at The Pig with a fantastic on-site kitchen garden where you’ll see the custodians (gardeners) working away in the herb gardens whilst chefs come out to pick their produce for the day.

The Pig Hotels also support a number of charities through their work including, In Schools, Hospitality In Action and Action Against Hunger.

Eco-friendly Practices

This 45 acre estate equipped with a number of room options in the Manor as well as a hideaway. We experienced the the walled garden suites foodie staycation option at Michelin-starred Grace & Savour, makes for a wonderful foodie sustainable staycation.

Hampton Manor’s sustainability ethos is pretty commendable and they even have an in-house head of sustainability and ethics. The Manor’s commitment to sustainability is commendable. Hampton Manor is one of the most eco-friendly hotels in the UK and quite a culinary focussed little gem.

They take this pledge very seriously from sourcing their food produce to energy conservation, in room textiles and working with local craftsmen and women. Hampton Manor has a dedicated head of sustainability and ethics who leads these initiatives, with team members being educated via FarmED, a model farm education centre located in the Cotswolds, about the future of a sustainable planet and its implications on the environment.

Further initiatives at The Manor, include, electric car charging points and combustion of biomass for heating and hot water. Local craftsmen and women who have hand crafted unique pieces of furniture, examples of these are the dark wood stools around the chef’s counter and the light shades at Grace & Savour.

Meat and vegetable food consumed at the Manor are sourced from biodynamic organic local farms, and a neighbouring estate that breeds rare breeds of cattle.

Produce grown in the walled garden is free from pesticides and chemicals with biodynamic methods being explored. The Manor is also part of the national movement to save the bees, within the walled garden, there are two bee hives which allow the kitchen to make use of the honey as well as some being sold in the bakery.

Grove of Narberth, Pembrokeshire

Eco-friendly hotels in the UK: Grove of Narberth exterior with Pond in the front and foliage surrounding the manor house

Eco-friendly Practices

We had a wonderful spring stay at The Grove of Narberth in Pembrokeshire one year and it’s truly a place that stays with you forever. This is not just its remote location and being one of the most beautiful eco-friendly hotels in the UK but also for the service and dedication from the staff.

The Grove’s sustainability efforts are pretty impressive, as reflected by their membership of Green Tourism UK having been awarded a Gold Tourism Award in 2017. Present and future plans include many planet friendly initiatives.

When it comes to food and drink at The Grove, Traceability of ingredients is important at The Grove and great care is taken to ensure they come from sustainable sources. Whenever possible local food is used and sourced from within a 50 mile radius of the hotel. The kitchen garden plays a big part in supplying herbs and vegetables but also there are four beehives at the periphery of the grounds beyond the lake, allowing the Grove to become self sufficient for honey.

Over 5000 trees were planted using local species like sessile oak, ash, birch, willow, alder, holly and hazel in order to restore some areas around the hotel to native woodland and meadow. In the future this will serve as beautiful areas for local flora and fauna to thrive. This is part of teh Woodland Project. Energy saving light bulbs are used across the hotel and they have also installed solar panels to supply electricity to both the main house and cottages. Additionally, most of the heating and hot water across the Grove is supplied by a 199kW Biomass Boiler. A large number of trees have been planted which provide a sustainable source of wood during the winter months.

The Grove has it’s own boreholes, which supply the entire premises with spring water. This water, which is filtered and UV treated, is freely available from the taps, it is bottled in reusable glass bottles so guests can enjoy it with meals and in their rooms. All glass, plastic and cardboard is recycled with some cardboard being used for composting. All garden and vegetable waste is composted and used in the winter as a fertiliser to refresh the soil.

Unlike many UK hotels, The Grove has a water treatment plant and reed beds enable foul water to be treated before it enters the environment. To increase biodiversity, the hotel has created a pond, hung bird boxes and planted wild meadows and trees. The hedgerows help ring fence the habitation of birds, butterflies, which can be seen throughout the meadows and surrounding environment. Guests can charge their cars during their stay in the car park, which accommodates Tesla and universal charging points.

The Goodwash Company is an award winning, ethical wash and lifestyle brand, created in Wales on a mission to change the world #onewashatatime. Each of their good skincare products are based on age old remedies for skin hair and fur. All products are natural, cruelty free and vegan accredited. The social enterprise ‘do good’ at every stage of their supply chain and also use their profits for good. Goodwash employ and work with local communities to make a sustainable difference and improve the lives of people and animals.

Be-lavie Impressive Bonus: Their kitchen garden is pretty extensive and open to guests to have a wonder around. It becomes quite the enchanting secret garden during the summer months. Their commitment to planting trees and preserving the area is truly inspiring.

The Scarlet, Cornwall

Be-lavie Impressive Bonus: The Scarlet has won many awards in sustainable tourism and is deemed a pioneer in terms of the construction of the building and areas that a resident wouldn’t normally think 0f.

Eco-friendly Practices

When the hotel was built, existing stone walls on the site were carefully deconstructed to allow for over 100 small reptiles (lizards, slow worms) to be rehoused and the insulation from the old hotel was sent over to a monkey sanctuary.

The Queensberry Hotel, Bath

Bejal sitting in bed wearing a white fluffy dressing gown reading Conde Nast Traveller in bed. The bed has white linen and a gold throw at the end. The wallpaper is a mustard and grey wallpaper and the headboard is a light brown colour. There are 2 bedside lights at each of the bed in a superior room at the Queensberry Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel in Bath

Eco-friendly Practices

We were impressed that the hotel has a sustainability policy and were striving to attain a silver award to become a leading Green Hotel in Bath. Here is what we learnt about the environmental considerations of the Queensberry during our 2 night stay a couple of weeks before one Christmas

  • Energy Consumption – A 25-30% reduction in CO2 emissions has been recoded since 2008, following installation of a boiler maintenance system. Energy efficient LED light bulbs have replaced previous less efficient ones.
  • Water Usage – All toilet cisterns are now dual flush or fitted with water displacement systems to reduce water use. Guests can choose when they require their towels and bed linens laundered to reduce water and chemical usage. The hotel has replaced toxic chemical based cleaning products with environmentally friendly alternatives and the hotel gardens are watered with with collected rain water.
  • Waste Management – waste such as glass, cardboard and paper products are segregated to enable recycling. Food waste is recycled through Grist ensuring zero waste to landfill.
  • Produce & Products – The majority of food products are sourced locally, and organic where possible. The focus is on local growers, seasonal and ethically produced food items as well as stationery, cleaning items being from local companies.
  • Raw materials – All paper products are replaced by UK manufactured material from accredited sustainable sources. The hotels laundering company has a defined sustainability policy to ensure there is minimal impact from detergents and promote water efficiency.
  • Staff Members – The team are encouraged to be aware of their impact and the hotel nominates ‘Environmental Champions’ throughout the hotel to keep an eye on procedures and policies and suggest new ideas for increased efficiency.
  • Single Use Plastic – In 2022, the hotel replaced single use plastic toiletries with Bath House products which are recycled and refillable.
  • Local drinks – the Old Q Bar features local drinks from Midford Cider, Bath Ales, Pilton Cider and Bluestone wines. The hotel has also partnered with Canned Wine Co. who have a holistic and honest approach to sustainability, from prioritising organic winemakers to their infinitely recyclable aluminium cans.
  • The Olive Tree Restaurant – Executive Head Chef, Chris Cleghorn, sources all local suppliers from Somerset and the South West area for the on-site Michelin star restaurant.

Be-lavie Tip: We particularly loved the sustainability and waste management attention given by The Olive Tree Restaurant. They hav a great local sourcing ethic and a real concern for responsible practice.

Located within the grounds of Loughborough University;s campus, we enjoyed a relaxing nights stay at Burleigh Court Hotel and tried their plant-based menu at Fifty The Street Restaurant. The restaurants menu is 50% vegan with a wonderful choice of sustainably sourced food and cocktail ingredients.

Each of the rooms has a sustainability card explaining the Burleigh Courts values including the ten key planet and people targets to bring a greener future to their brand. The card has a QR code which directs guests to the Imago Venues Manifesto that is pretty impressive and well thought out and includes the below initiatives.

A side note about the sustainability card, we noted the paper is made from 90% recycled PCW fibre and 5% coffee waste. The coffee added to the pulp replaces cellulose and thus the requirement for water and energy is far less to produce,

  • Profit into People – Annually gift aid profits that constitute a 10% contribution to Loughborough University’s operating fund.

Staying in a sustainable hotel is not just about the recycling and composting initiatives but also the energy reduction, the sourcing of furniture, food, local craftsmen and woman and also supporting the surrounding community which maybe to do with creating jobs by employing them directly or providing guest experiences to visit their crafts and partaking in cultural activities.

Most sustainable hotels like the ones featured here generally have a annual report available either on their website or can be requested so that guests can see the progress of their initiatives as an organisation that serves guests but also what they are doing locally in terms of social and environmental initiatives. This would feature goals and pledges they commit to including the ongoing education of their staff irrespective of position held, Remember that B Corp certification isn’t an award and more a work in progress in achieving and addressing a list of objectives that stem and cover every part of a business from the roots up.
