INTRODUCING SEATON: A BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE IN RUTLAND

Resuming our short series on quintessential English village glamour, let me introduce you to Seaton. Located in the adjoining county of Rutland, the population is small at around 250 but is one of the cutest little villages I’ve visited.

Set amongst the green countryside, at the heart of Seaton lies All Hallows Church. It originates from the 12^th century however was largely restored by N.M Fawcett between 1874 and 1875.

Seaton was first recorded in the Doomsday Book as Seiton and Segentone and is thought to mean ‘farm or village’ but could also have been named after a stream named ‘Sǣġa’ which means slow-moving.

The village is a classic mix of thatched stoned cottages with much newer properties and holiday cottages overlooking the glorious green hills of Rutland county.

The Village Hall is the epicentre of Village life with a whole host of activities being hosted here as well as a beautiful flower stall, which I witnessed on my visit.

For social gatherings and cosy pub beverages, the village houses ‘The George and Dragon’ so if you fancy a country drive, you can pop in for a bite to eat and a quench thirsting beverage with friendly service. Meet the friendly locals, hear their stories and get a feeling of this little community.

Overlooking the fields you will get a glimpse of the Welland (Seaton/Harringworth) Viaduct, which is three quarters of a mile long and took around four years to build.

It has 82 archways, measuring around 22 metres high, previously being used as a freight line, it now provides a restricted passenger service from Oakham to London.

Seaton Fun Facts

• Thomas Minot, who later went on to become Archbishop of Dublin became Parson here in 1351.

• In 1968, Major General Robert Overton, A soldier who supported the Parliamentary cause during the English Civil War, was buried here

• When the founder of Rolls Royce, Henry Royce, was created a Baronet, he decided Seaton would be his territorial designation as his family had worked here as millers.
