SCHLÖSSLE HOTEL TALLINN: A LUXURY HOTEL REVIEW

When planning a visit to Estonia’s capital, there really is only one hotel that we place top of our list for it’s location at the bottom of a picturesque cobbled stoned street in the old, town sits The Schlössle Hotel Tallinn. This beautiful luxury hotel is the perfect base to explore the medieval city of Tallinn and it’s surroundings on a long weekend or mid-week break. How to Get To The Schlössle Hotel Tallinn

When we visited Tallinn, we were impressed with Tallinn airport and it’s amenities. The capital’s airport is named,  Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport and is located around 4 kilometres or 2.5 miles from Tallinn Old Town, where many visitors to the city choose to stay. It’s quite an easy jpurney whether you opt for grabbing a taxi, or the bus.

We took a taxi as we arrived really early in the morning on a pretty warm day and just wanted to drop our bags off quickly and head for breakfast!

Bus

Buses no 2 and 15 both go from Tallinn airport to the Old Town but bear in mind you’ll obviously have to make your way from the bus stop to the hotel so be sure to add the location of the Schlössle Hotel to Google Maps on your Smartphone. After collecting your luggage, head down the escalator to the lower level or Lennujaamfrom the Arrivals Hall and simply follow the signs.

Bus No 2: leaves from Baltic Station in the city centre and stops at Freedom Square, Estonia puiestee and Kaubamaja street

Bus No 15: leaves from bus stop “Estonia” in the city centre, next to Solaris Shopping centre. 

Tickets can be bought on the bus using a contactless card or from the bus ticket machine at the airport fro €2. It only takes around 20-25 minutes one way. This Bus Timetable may help with logistics upon arrival

Taxi

Grabbing a taxi couldn’t be easier and the taxi rank is located right in front of the Arrivals hall outside. Expect to pay around €15 but is perfect if like us you’re in a hurry to drop your luggage off.

Be-lavie Tip: If taking the bus, remember to save the address of Schlossle Hotel in your Google Maps so you know exactly where you’re going. The cobblestoned streets don’t always make it easy to walk.

Schlössle Hotel Tallinn : A Little History

The building that the the Schlössle Hotel Tallinn stands now dates back to the 13th century and was part of a cobbled stone street of houses that were used to house goods from ships that brought good from all over the world including Africa.

Over the centuries the buildings where the hotel stands has had much work done to it, especially in 1739 and 1758, when theer were major construction works happening including demolishing the triangular gothic gables with the cellars and ground floors being vaulted.

The inserted ceilings were replaced, as were the stoen framed cargo windows with Baroque styled windows, Today you can see a few of the original remaining doorways, windows and ventilation openings that were framed in stone. All the changes, don’t take away from the sturdy medieval base walls and the hotel today is considered a ‘baroque -gothic’ building.

Schlössle Hotel has been pain-stakingly restored to fit in perfectly at the base of the cobbled-stoned street in Tallinn’s old town, where many historical biblical figures have walked and today has a beautiful pink and pale green doubled faced frontage. It oozes charm and character and this was one of the reasons we chose to stay here. It combines history with traditional decor but with all the modern amenities you’d need in a luxury hotel with a fairytale-like setting.

An Introduction: The Schlössle Hotel

This 23 bedroom 5-star boutique hotel is nestled between the historic storage buildings and merchant houses as we described previously, with this magnificent medieval building dating back to the thirteenth century. Its the charm and character that really put it at the top of our list and also that it’s part of the Schlössle Group, and we stayed at sister property, Grand Palace Hotel Riga, previously.

The Schlössle Hotel is a member of the prestigious Leading hotels of the World and as expected, the hotel really is a feast for the eyes on arrival. The hotel aesthetic does not look one bit out of place on the medieval street with its striped awning and shutters and the most beautifully co-ordinated pink hydrangeas in big pots, to greet you at the door.

Walking into the cosy, low beamed reception you can imagine the open stoned fireplace with a roaring fire on a cold winters day. The corner sofa is super squishy and inviting and makes for a really warm and inviting space. Watch out for the low beamed ceiling, stoned walls and neutral toned furnishings that fills the space, making it look more like a lounge than a formal lobby area.

The reception/lobby area also has clusters of seating combinations around the large space, with gothic candle lit light fittings and dark wood display cabinets as well as baskets of logs for the open fire.

This beautiful quaint Estonian luxury hotel has hosted many VIP guests, from HRH King Charles to Bon Jovi, Sting and even Sporty Spice, Mel C. Infact the list is pretty long and there are plaques just off the main reception as well as a signed guest book, which takes centre place in the inviting reception/lounge.

Check-in is a swift and speedy process and we were offered welcome drinks of Prosecco, orange juice or coffee but we settled with the juice. Soon after a little relaxation time in the reception area, we were shown to our room.

Rooms At The Schlossle Hotel Riga

The 23 rooms at the hotel are split over the main building, as well a garden annexe and available in the categories of Superior, Deluxe, Junior Suites, one bedroom Suites and a very plush looking Presidential Suite, which I’m assuming is perfect for VIPs or those wishing to splurge out duirng their stay in Tallinn.

We opted for a deluxe garden suite located in the Annexe. The Annexe is a cute little out building accessed from the main building and through the garden terrace, it houses four rooms.

Our room was located on the first floor, of the Annexe, only accessible by a very steep thirteenth century staircase, which could be reminiscent of a fairytale where the prince charming would climb to rescue his princess! It’s surrounded by a stone wall so be very careful when walking up as a fall could be pretty painful. If you do have accessibility issues, ask for the Annexe ground floor rooms or opt to stay in the main hotel building.

The Deluxe Garden Suite Room

We were staying in Room 19 and we’d stay it was a was a dream. Upon entering we wandered straight to the window, which had views of the surrounding medieval buildings and looked straight into the floral garden filled with hues of pink and red. It was perfect for a four night stay. Our favourite part was the low beamed ceilings and how it bought memories of a bygone age to our stay. It was like an introduction to experience this fairytale city, starting with this utterly delightful abode.

A comfy large bed perfectly positioned in the alcove with cute bedside tables. Covered with a lovely warm throw in keeping with woody but neutral tones of the interiors of the hotel. Large bed-side lamps lit the perfect romantic evening environment.

We loved the defined seating area with a relaxing sofa to collapse into after a days sightseeing next to the large and spacious wardrobe, which included a press.

A desk just in case you have any important writing matters to take care of with a number of books about the area and what to eat, a guide of the best award winning restaurants in Tallinn.

One of the our favourite features of the room was a beautiful almost Moroccan riad-like light fitting, which was left on for you during the night turn down service. It gave the room a beautiful warm ambience whilst you sat munching on your evening chocolates left by the hotel staff.

We say the added extras always makes a big difference and provide a little extra special ambiance. when we walked into our suite we found the personal note from the hotel manager, welcoming us to the hotel with a plate of chocolate dipped strawberries and meringues. Nice touch!

The bathroom features a white suite complete with a bath and shower, vabity basins, fluffy bath robes, perfect to slip into after. along days sightseeing as well as soft white towels. Toiletries are by Gilchrist & Soames, and include shampoo and conditioner, body cream , soap and shower gel.

Stenhus Restaurant: Breakfast & Dining

Breakfast is served at The Stenhus Restaurant in the basement of the main building, which was extremely characterful with vaulted ceilings and low level atmospheric lighting.

It consists of a fabulous spread of cold items in a buffet format but one of the best choices I’d seen including fresh fruit served with mini meringues and the usual juices, breads, cheeses, cold meats, pastries etc and if you fancy it a glass or two of Prosecco!

Hot items were made to order including meats, eggs your way together with pancakes, homemade muesli and porridge.

The same restaurant is transformed for lunch or evening service, Dinner at the restaurant can be enjoyed as an a la carte menu or theer is the option of a set menu. We would say that one of the reasons we didn’t eat here is that they had little to none vegetarian options aside from the deserts, We didn’t delve into this too much as we generally do prefer to eat out and check out the dining scene in the cities we visit. Tallinn has a wonderful foodie scene and there is so much delicious food and drinks spots to choose from, including great vegetarian and cegan options.

Be-lavie Tip: If you do plan to eat at the Stenhus Restaurant, it’s best to enquire about dietary requirements when you check-in to ensue the chefs can accommodate.

Summer Terrace Garden

If you fancy an alfresco meal ie breakfast, lunch or dinner or just simply to sip on a few drinks after a long days exploration, the outdoor terrace is ideal. It’s also the perfect place to get some itinerary done just we did. The area is filled with beautiful pink co-ordinating flowers, comfortable seating, tables and it’s such a relaxing courtyard space right in the heart of this medieval building.

The garden is beautifully manicured on a daily basis and you can sit in the peaceful surroundings as you watch the day go by amongst the beautiful flowers, floral arch and wall with birds teetering away in the background. we’d recommend taking a cup of coffee down and taking a pew on one of the rattan chairs and savouring a moments in this special space.

Other Amenities

The hotel also has spa facilities including a sauna, which must be booked at reception for private use. We had fab weather during our visit so we didn’t make use of the spa, as we wanted to be out enjoying it. We can totally understand, in the colder months a Sauna and a nice spa treatment would be ideal after a day on your feet.

Sustainability at The Schlössle Hotel Tallinn

The Schlössle Hotel have been awarded the Green Key certification for their commendable ongoing contributions to eco-friendly practices.

Here are some points the hotel are practicing sustainability throughout which are translated to guests to partake in:

• Environmental Management – Implementation of energy efficient practices, LRD lightbulbs, motion sensors, reducing paper consumption by digitalisation or use of FSC-certified paper if absolutely necessary. They also choose green electric energy, 100% from renewable sources. Guesst are encouraged to reuse towels and linens, as well as insatlling water saving devices. The hotel has a comprehensive recycling program, minimisation of single-use plastics, eco-friendly packaging, education of staff, reducing food waste in the kitchen and using orgnaic ingredients from local farms and businesses.
• Social Responsibility – employee wellbeing is a priority with a privision of sustainable staff training programs, having a good work life balance. The use of environmentally-friendly textiles and cleaning products in gues rooms, such as Nordic-labelled cleaning products and encouraging guests to reuse items during their stay.
• Community Engagement – local sourcing which is organic and premium for restaurant menus, prioritising of local ingredients over imports, work with suppliers who have a shared commitment to sustainability and are meticulously chosen to ensure sustainable practices. Community involvement is key with the hotel partaking in local events and initiatives, supporting of local entrepreneurs and producers who highly champion sustainable practices and contribute to the business community.
• Continuous Improvement – The sustainability performance and initiatives are regularly monitored and improved. All goals are communicated to staff and guests a like. Tallinn is a wonderful gem of a city which has so many things to see and do, from historical monuments and bell towers for awe-inspiring views to ex Soviet point of interest, a beach, lovely cafes and restaurants and small creative hubs located a short bus ride away from the UNESCO Old Town.
