Originally built in 1881 Wrea Head Hall is a an independently owned luxury hideaway set in the small Yorkshire village of Scalby, near Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coastline. It lies on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park with direct views across the North Yorkshire countryside.

Wrea Head Hall: The Hotel

The mansion house is of Gothic style and comprises of 25 rooms and suites spread across the original mansion house and newly converted carriage house. The hotel is a kids-free zone and focusses on country relaxation, tranquillity, impeccable service, beautifully appointed abodes, exceptional classic cuisine as well as a personable experience. It is also an ideal base to explore the surrounding coastline and makes for a restful haven to return to after a long day’s activities. Think fireplaces, flickering candlelight, high ceilings, grand yet cosy interiors with a homely touch.

Driving up the long path to the house you’re met by a beautiful brick fronted mansion house with grand entrance and ivy covered exterior. There is plenty of room for parking so once parked enter the grand gothic entrance and swiftly check in.

Wrea Head Hall: The Mansion

To the left of the reception area is a stunning hallway come seating area, displaying tall ceilings, comfy yet characterful seating as well as a huge stained-glass window. A lovely space for gathering before dinner or retiring to post mealtimes.

If you climb the stairs to the first level, you will see the gallery or Mezzanine area, which almost has a balcony overlooking the hallway and stunning rich deep red walls.

Off the hallway is the Library, which is also a Private Dining Room, available to hire for a special occasion or if you fancy a fine dining meal. It faces the front of the property and has a large collection of books, paintings and artefacts. The crystal chandeliers give the room a somewhat decadent feel about it as well as an open fireplace used in the winter months.

Next door is the bar, which faces the beautiful manicured lawn and garden of the property. This room has been decorated to a more modern, clean taste with dark leather Chesterfield style sofas and huge windows that reflect the light from the lighter walls to create very airy ambience. The bar is well stocked and has a fine collection of spirits and wines on offer.

There is also an outdoor terrace area with neutral rattan furniture looking out to the never-ending green hues of fields and the distance sound of sheep grazing.

To the side of the bar is the newer addition, a conservatory, which has views to the side of the property and more gardens with a row of benches.

Back through the hallway is the main dining room, which again looks out to the side of the property with a mullion bay window, traditional panelled walls, draped curtains and tastefully selected paintings. This stunning room also doubles up as the breakfast room.

The Rooms & Suites

The Mansion Accommodation

The rooms and suites are scattered throughout the Mansion and Carriage House and have been finished to a high quality. Categories include classic, superior, deluxe, luxury and suites. Each abode is individually designed using beautiful fabrics, romantic lighting, crisp linens, tasteful wallpapers with light hues and accents to ensure the room is as airy as allows.

Bathroom facilities are modern with some rooms featuring an in-room roll-top or modern bath and separate WC. Original fittings and fixtures are present where possible. All rooms come with TV, WIFI, hot drinks making facilities, usual comfortable amenities including L’occitane Provence, toiletries.

The Carriage House Accommodation

The Carriage House had been newly converted and at present has only three rooms of which two are Deluxe and one Superior level. It is accessed via its very own courtyard and partaking is  right outside for ease!

Room 31, is located on the first floor with views of a paddock and foliage. The surprise to staying in the Carriage House is that the rooms are classic yet contemporary in design.

Wrea Head Hall Luxury Hotel, Scalby

The walls are wooden panelling painted in a light grey palette, and the bed is a feature of the room, being a king-size Venetian four-poster bed. There is also an in-room free standing bathtub and a black granite double shower cubicle with probably the BEST shower I have ever experienced to date!!

Please note: It is recommended that if you have a specific room in mind, do select and request this at  booking to ensure you secure a room of your choice. We were not aware of this as we had hoped to stay in one of the elegant old-world Mansion rooms but were allocated a Carriage House room upon check-in. We were by no means disappointed with our room and loved the extra privacy of it’s location.

The Dining Experience

The dining experience at Wrea Head Hall is very much along the lines of traditional fine dining and the food is exquisite. Ingredients are fresh, local and seasonal with two vegetarian options for each course. Dietary requirements can be catered for with advanced notice.

Evening meals are three course and you can select these in advance the evening before, arrive at the bar for pre-dinner drinks, after which you are taken to your table and seated.

We dined at the hotel for two nights and got to try a few dishes from the fixed menu, which were all delicious and presented beautifully with exceptional flavours.

Breakfast once again is pre-selected via an in-room menu in the late afternoon and continental and cooked options are available. Infact the choice is more than adequate and cooked to perfection.

Activities & Things to do in North Yorskhire

Wrea Head Hotel can recommend an array of things to do and see in the local vicinity however you will need transport. We used hotel as a relaxing base to return to after spending the day in the North Yorkshire coastal towns and villages. With the Yorkshire Moors in such close proximity, it’s a popular spot for walkers.
